Varanasi Residents Left Reeling Over Exorbitant Electricity Bills

Varanasi: A wave of panic and frustration has swept through several residential neighborhoods in Varanasi following the integration of new smart electricity meters. Local consumers are raising serious alarms over suddenly inflated monthly bills, with many claiming their electricity charges have spiked four to five times higher than their usual averages.

According to reports published by Dainik Jagran, the financial strain has triggered widespread distress, particularly across areas like Sarsauli and the surrounding urban clusters where families are receiving unprecedented bills.

Astronomical Spikes Leave Families Helpless

For many households, the arrival of the monthly electricity statement has turned into a nightmare. In several extreme cases documented locally, residents who historically averaged bill amounts between ₹8,000 and ₹10,000 are now seeing totals cross a staggering ₹51,000.

  • Case in Point: In one specific case under the Machodari subdivision, a resident named Suman Devi, whose average monthly bill previously hovered around ₹9,000 to ₹10,000, was shocked to receive a mobile alert detailing an outstanding bill of ₹51,334.

  • The Ground Reality: Similar stories have emerged from individual household consumers like Buchan Devi from Sarsauli, who received a billing notification for ₹50,968, shortly after which her power supply was disconnected, creating a critical crisis for her family during intense weather conditions.

Summer Demand vs. Meter Mechanics

The issue has severely impacted households reliant on air conditioning units and heavy cooling appliances during the high-demand summer season. While power officials often attribute higher summer bills to seasonal lifestyle changes and peak load consumption, residents strongly dispute the math. Local consumers insist that their daily appliance usage and household habits have remained entirely unchanged compared to previous years, rendering a 400% to 500% jump mathematically unjustifiable.

The discrepancy has caused immense friction at local power substations like Bada Lalpur and Machodari, where crowds of distressed consumers have been arriving daily to lodge complaints. Many claim that ground-level officials are refusing to review the erratic data, leaving them with an ultimatum: pay the inflated sum or face immediate disconnection.

Department Response and System Transitions

Amid mounting public anger and dynamic tracking issues, senior officials from the discom have noted that some of the sudden spikes reflect the adjustment of older, unbilled arrears or overlapping reading data during the system transition.
