Varanasi Among Hottest Cities as Temperature Touches 43°C, Heatwave Intensifies

Varanasi: The intense heatwave gripping northern India has pushed Varanasi among the hottest cities in Uttar Pradesh, with the maximum temperature soaring to 43°C and residents facing severe discomfort due to scorching weather conditions.
After a brief spell of strong winds and light rainfall earlier in the week, clear skies returned over the city, causing temperatures to rise sharply once again. Meteorological data showed that the maximum temperature increased by more than one degree Celsius and remained nearly 5°C above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 30.7°C, making Varanasi the warmest city in the state during nighttime hours.
The extreme weather significantly affected daily life across the city. Hot westerly winds continued to blow throughout the afternoon, making outdoor conditions unbearable. During peak hours, wind speeds increased to nearly 18 kmph, while humidity levels combined with the heat to create a "feels-like" temperature of around 47°C.
Roads, marketplaces, and public spaces witnessed reduced activity as people avoided stepping out during the hottest part of the day. Popular locations such as Godowlia and the city's famous ghats saw comparatively lower footfall, with many residents choosing to remain indoors to escape the relentless heat.
Health experts have advised citizens to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions have been identified as the most vulnerable groups during the ongoing heatwave.
According to meteorologists, there is little immediate relief in sight. Weather officials have forecast that severe heatwave conditions may continue for the next five to six days, with temperatures expected to remain well above seasonal averages until at least June 24.
Authorities have urged residents to follow safety guidelines, carry drinking water while travelling, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during afternoon hours. The prolonged heatwave has once again highlighted the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions and the need for adequate precautions to protect public health.
