The Varanasi Cantt–New Delhi Vande Bharat left platform side about three and a half hours behind the timetable on Sunday, turning a one-hour turnaround into a long wait for passengers booked on the evening leg.

Train 22435 is carded to depart Varanasi Cantt at 3 pm. On 21 September it rolled out closer to 6.30 pm. The delay was inherited from the inbound rake: 22436, the New Delhi–Varanasi service that normally leaves the capital around 6 am and reaches Cantt near 2 pm, started about 8.20 am from New Delhi and pulled in around 5.45 pm — roughly three hours and forty-five minutes late — before forming the return 22435.

That pairing is how the semi-high-speed circuit works on this route. The same train-set arrives, crews reset, and the rake goes back toward New Delhi. When the up service is late, the down service inherits the slip unless railways can spare another rake — which they did not on Sunday.

Passengers who had planned afternoon arrivals in Delhi saw their evening compress. Platform waiting rooms and circulating areas at Cantt carried the usual Sunday load, and a multi-hour hold on a premium train tends to spill into food stalls and taxi queues outside the station as much as onto the platform itself.

Railway notes from the previous day pointed to a similar pattern: Saturday’s outbound Vande Bharat from Varanasi was also reported about four hours late. Two successive delayed turns do not by themselves prove a systemic fault on the route, but they do explain why Sunday’s crowd was already primed to watch the arrival board for 22436 before trusting the 3 pm departure slot.

No passenger injuries or onboard technical failure at Cantt were reported in connection with Sunday’s late start. The operational story is schedule propagation — a late departure from New Delhi, a late arrival into Varanasi, and a late return toward the capital.

For travellers, the practical takeaway is blunt. Until live running status shows 22436 inside Cantt with enough buffer, the published 3 pm slot for 22435 is only a plan. Apps and station enquiry remain the safer guide than the printed timetable when the inbound rake is already hours down.

Varanasi Cantt handles a dense mix of mail expresses and newer semi-high-speed turns. Sunday’s slip on 22435/22436 sat alongside that ordinary traffic rather than blocking the whole yard, but for anyone holding a Vande Bharat ticket it was the difference between an afternoon journey and a night arrival in Delhi.

Railways had not issued a detailed public cause note for the New Delhi late start by Monday morning. Until that arrives, passengers are left with the running-status trail: 22436 late out of the capital, late into Cantt, and 22435 late home.
