GURUGRAM: A case has been registered against at least 12 unidentified men for allegedly ramming a police vehicle, assaulting a Special Task Force team and opening fire on its members during vehicle checking at the Bhondsi cut on the Sohna elevated highway late on Saturday, police said.

Three STF personnel were injured and were taken to the civil hospital in Sohna for treatment. Police said the men fled towards Bhondsi after the STF team fired back. No arrest had been announced till Sunday evening.

The complaint was filed by PSI Raj Kumar of the STF Central Unit. According to the account given by police, a five-member team had set up a checkpoint at the Bhondsi cut around 9.30 pm after receiving information that a wanted criminal was likely to travel from Gurugram towards Bhondsi.

Around 10 pm, three cars carrying 12 to 15 men reached the spot, police said. When the team signalled them to stop, the drivers allegedly sped up and one of the cars rammed the police SUV. The occupants then allegedly got out, beat up the personnel, smashed the windows of the police vehicle and fired at the team.

An FIR has been registered at Bhondsi police station under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 117 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 221 (obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Arms Act, 1959. These are allegations at this stage, and nobody has yet been named publicly as an accused. Section 109 of the BNS, which replaced the Indian Penal Code in July 2024, is the equivalent of the old section 307 that readers will know from earlier attempt-to-murder cases.

Police said CCTV footage from the stretch and technical surveillance are being used to trace the three cars and the people in them. Investigators have not said whether the wanted man the STF was looking for was in one of the vehicles.

A busy corridor with a history of armed cases

The elevated road over the Gurugram-Sohna highway carries heavy traffic between the city and Sohna, and its cuts and ramps near Bhondsi are used both by commuters and by vehicles heading into the villages along the Aravalli edge. Night checkpoints on such stretches are common when police act on specific inputs.

The STF Central Unit has been active on this belt. Last month the unit arrested a suspected arms supplier in Sohna with six pistols, and earlier the Gurugram STF picked up a wanted man carrying a Rs 55,000 reward. Police have not linked those cases to Saturday's attack.

What stands out in the complaint is the number of people involved. Police describe three cars and a group large enough to overpower a five-member team, which is why the FIR invokes attempt to murder and not only obstruction or rioting provisions.

For people who use the Sohna highway at night, police have not announced any change to traffic or checking arrangements. Motorists stopped at a checkpoint are expected to pull over and follow instructions, and anyone who saw the incident or has dashcam footage from the stretch around 10 pm on Saturday can share it with Bhondsi police.

The injured personnel were reported to be under treatment, and police have not released details on the seriousness of their injuries. The condition of the three men and the identification of the cars will shape how quickly the case moves. Because the FIR is against unidentified people, suspects will be named only as they are traced, and any charge sheet will list who is finally accused.

Police said arrests were expected soon. Once suspects are identified, the investigation will also have to establish where the weapons came from, a question that has come up repeatedly in recent firing cases on the southern edge of the district, including the stretch where a Rs 140 crore Sohna highway underpass has been proposed.
