GURUGRAM: The prime suspect in the alleged killing of a 36-year-old paying guest owner in Sector 12 was arrested from Delhi within hours of the shooting on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, a 40-year-old ex-serviceman from Bhiwani, had reached the victim's home using public transport and fled to Delhi after hiring an auto-rickshaw, from where police arrested him, investigators said. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Naveen Sharma said the accused had allegedly lent Rs 6.5 lakh to the victim in 2021, of which Rs 1.5 lakh remained unpaid. The two had become acquainted about six years earlier through a common associate.

"On Tuesday, he reached the victim's home from Bhiwani to collect the pending amount of Rs 1.5 lakh. The victim called their common associate to remain present at the spot," Sharma said. Police said the two discussed repayment for nearly half an hour before a heated exchange, after which the accused allegedly realised he would not receive the money that day.

"The accused became infuriated, pulled out his licensed pistol that he had carried from Bhiwani to Gurugram and shot the victim in the forehead from close range," Sharma said, according to the police version. The associate alerted the police control room. Sector 14 police, paramedical teams and forensic experts reached the spot. The victim was taken to a private hospital in Sector 14 and later shifted to another hospital in Sector 44, where he was declared dead on arrival.

An FIR was registered at the Sector 14 police station on the associate's complaint under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act, police said. The accused had retired from the Army in 2024, according to investigators. Police have framed the alleged motive around the unpaid Rs 1.5 lakh balance from a larger 2021 loan, and the presence of the common associate as both witness to the repayment talk and the person who dialled the control room.

The case rests on the police narrative of a loan dispute turning into a fatal shooting inside a residential setting. Guilt will be determined by the court. The rapid arrest from Delhi has been cited by police as the result of swift control-room alerts and follow-up after the associate's call, closing the first hours of a Sector 12 homicide that began as a debt collection visit from Bhiwani. Police said the associate who dialled the control room remained a key witness to the repayment talk that preceded the alleged shooting.
