Kashi Naresh Initiates Selection for Historic Ramnagar Ramlila; Performances to Begin Sept 25

VARANASI — Preparations for the world-famous Ramnagar Ramlila are officially underway, with the Kashi Naresh (the royal family of Varanasi) initiating the meticulous selection process for the actors. The month-long theatrical spectacle, deeply woven into the cultural fabric of the region, is set to commence this year on September 25.
The Ramnagar Ramlila, which dates back to the 19th century and is recognized for its traditional authenticity and lack of modern electrical embellishments, involves an exhaustive search for its core cast. Following centuries-old customs, the pivotal roles of the Swaroops—the divine figures of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughan—are cast exclusively from a pool of young boys.
The Audition Process
The selection criteria are stringent and deeply rooted in classical tradition. Children aged between 8 and 14 years are currently being auditioned by the royal family. The young hopefuls are not judged on acting experience, but rather on their vocal clarity, tone, and spiritual resonance.
Specifically, the selection is based on:
Vocal Purity: Their ability to clearly and powerfully articulate verses in a high pitch.
Scriptural Mastery: Flawless pronunciation of complex Sanskrit shlokas and chaupais (verses) from Goswami Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas.
Rigorous 45-Day Training
Being selected as a Swaroop is considered an immense honor, but it also marks the beginning of a highly demanding preparation period. Once the final cast is chosen by the Kashi Naresh, the children will enter a specialized gurukul-style environment.
For 45 days leading up to the September 25 premiere, the selected participants will undergo intensive daily training. Mentored by traditional directors (known as Vyas), the boys will learn the nuances of facial expressions, the softening of their vocal tones for specific emotional scenes, and the intricate choreography required to perform across the moving, open-air stages of Ramnagar.
During this period of isolation and training, the children are revered as living deities by the locals. The royal family also ensures that their regular academic studies are not interrupted, arranging for tutors to visit the training camp.
As September approaches, the town of Ramnagar prepares to transform once again into the ancient city of Ayodhya, ready to host thousands of devotees and tourists for a 31-day immersive journey through the epic Ramayana.
