Varanasi: Forty entrepreneurs from Varanasi are preparing to present the city’s traditional crafts, GI-tagged goods and newer industrial products at the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show in Greater Noida. The event is scheduled for 25 to 29 September at the India Expo Centre and Mart, where the district contingent will meet buyers, policymakers and industry representatives.

The Varanasi group includes 15 entrepreneurs working under the One District One Product programme, five MSME units and 20 exporters, according to deputy commissioner Abhishek Priyadarshi of the District Industries Promotion and Entrepreneurship Development Centre. A dedicated ODOP stall is planned, and the district’s ODOP lines also carry geographical-indication recognition.

For Kashi, the opportunity is not simply to display beautiful objects. International buyers ask whether an artisan cluster can reproduce quality, meet a delivery date, document origin and package a product for transport. A trade-show order becomes valuable only when pricing, capacity and compliance survive the conversation after the exhibition.

Banarasi weaving is the most recognisable name, but Varanasi’s craft economy includes wooden lacquerware, metal repousse work, glass beads, gulabi meenakari and other specialised products. The district should ensure that the display does not flatten this diversity into a generic souvenir shelf. Each item needs a clear material story and an honest explanation of what work was done by hand.

GI protection can help distinguish authentic regional products, yet the label does not market itself. Visitors need to understand why place matters, how to verify a registered producer and what makes an imitation different. QR-based catalogues can help, provided they lead to stable contact details and do not collect unnecessary customer data.

Women-led businesses and younger entrepreneurs are expected in the delegation. Their participation should include buyer meetings and export guidance, not only a place behind the stall. Government subsidies for prescribed participation expenses can reduce the cost barrier, but applicants need written clarity on what is reimbursed and when.

The period before September should be used for practical preparation: standard wholesale price lists, production timelines, high-quality photographs, sample packaging and basic export documentation. Group logistics can lower freight costs for small units that cannot ship a demonstration collection alone.

Varanasi’s crafts already carry global recognition, but recognition and reliable market access are different achievements. The trade show can connect the two if the district treats artisans as businesses with design intelligence, not as decorative performers. Forty participants will carry Kashi’s name to Greater Noida; the durable result will be measured in repeat orders and fair earnings when they return.
