Varanasi, June 21, 2026: IIT-BHU has initiated work towards establishing the Yavatkar Convention Center at the Rajputana Ground area, a proposed student-centric facility that is expected to become operational from 2028.

New Campus Activity Hub Planned

According to reports and institute updates, the Yavatkar Convention Center is being planned as a multi-functional institutional space for academic events, student activities, innovation-led engagement and collaborative learning.

The facility is linked to support from Raj Yavatkar, an alumnus of IIT-BHU and former chief technology officer at Juniper Networks, through the IIT-BHU Foundation. The project adds to the institute's continuing effort to modernise student and academic infrastructure.

Facilities Proposed

Reports said the planned facilities include a 204-seat Senate Hall, a 138-seat multipurpose hall, two seminar halls, cafeteria spaces, a 562-seat auditorium, six activity zones and an open theatre.

The centre is expected to serve a wide range of uses, from academic discussions and seminars to cultural programmes, institutional meetings and student-led initiatives. Its location near the Rajputana Ground area makes it part of a wider campus development conversation.

Why Students Will Watch This Closely

Large technical institutions need more than classrooms and labs. They need spaces where students can host events, discuss ideas, collaborate across departments and build communities outside formal coursework.

If delivered well, the Yavatkar Convention Center can become a visible student-life and academic-engagement hub for IIT-BHU. Such spaces often help students connect with alumni, industry leaders, researchers and cultural groups.

Student organisations are likely to benefit from access to purpose-built venues for debates, workshops, technical talks, cultural evenings and innovation showcases. A strong central venue can also reduce pressure on scattered departmental spaces during major campus events.

Why It Matters

IIT-BHU is one of Varanasi's most important education institutions. A modern convention and activity centre can help the institute host higher-quality events and support its growing academic profile.

The project also reflects the role of alumni contributions in campus development. For Varanasi, investments of this nature strengthen the city's position as a place where heritage, education and technology infrastructure can grow together.

The centre will be watched for execution timelines, accessibility and how effectively it is made available to students once operational. Its long-term value will depend not just on the building, but on the academic and student activity culture it supports.
