VARANASI: Students seeking a flexible degree or additional qualification can apply to the Indira Gandhi National Open University study centre at Harishchandra PG College until August 31.

The centre is accepting applications for undergraduate programmes including BA and BCom, along with postgraduate courses in history, political science, economics, sociology and commerce. An MSc in chemistry is also listed, as are certificate, diploma and postgraduate diploma options. Centre coordinator Professor Om Sharma announced the deadline in the local admission update.

Open and distance learning can suit people who are employed, preparing for competitive examinations, caring for family members or living too far from a conventional campus. It is not, however, a shortcut around study. Learners must manage reading, assignments, practical or counselling requirements and examination schedules with less day-to-day supervision.

Applicants should verify the exact programme name, eligibility and fee on IGNOU’s official admission portal before paying. Similar abbreviations can refer to different courses, and some programmes may require a relevant undergraduate subject or attendance at practical sessions. Chemistry applicants in particular should confirm how laboratory components are organised at or through the study centre.

The Harishchandra PG College centre provides a local point of contact, but admission is completed under IGNOU rules. Candidates should upload clear copies of photographs, signatures, educational certificates and category documents where applicable. Names and dates of birth should match the supporting records because correcting them later can be slow.

Students also need to distinguish between an admission portal and unrelated websites that offer to “guarantee” enrolment. Fees should be paid only through an authorised channel, and the applicant should retain the control number, payment receipt and a copy of the submitted form. Cybercafes can assist with scanning, but the student remains responsible for checking every entry before final submission.

Choosing a programme deserves more thought than beating the deadline. A postgraduate degree in economics or sociology serves a different purpose from a short vocational certificate. Prospective learners should consider the syllabus, recognition required by a future employer, examination centre options and the weekly time they can realistically give to study.

The August 31 closing date leaves a limited window to resolve missing documents. Applicants waiting for a certificate should check whether a provisional record is accepted rather than assuming they can submit incomplete information. They should also contact the study centre for course-specific counselling hours.

For Varanasi residents, the local centre reduces the distance between a national open university and the learner using it. Its value will depend on responsive counselling, timely study material and accurate guidance after admission. The immediate step is simple: verify the programme, complete the official application before August 31 and keep a complete record of the transaction.
