Government Hospitals in Varanasi Introduce User Charges for Select Medical Services

Varanasi: Patients visiting government hospitals in Varanasi will now have to pay user charges for several medical services, marking a significant change in the public healthcare system. While many essential diagnostic services will continue to be provided free of cost, charges ranging from ₹50 to ₹400 have been introduced for specific procedures and facilities.
According to the new guidelines, patients will be required to deposit the prescribed fees before availing services such as ECG, plaster application, physiotherapy sessions, surgical procedures, and admission to private wards. The revised fee structure has been implemented across major government hospitals, as well as Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) in the district.
Health officials have clarified that several essential diagnostic services, including X-rays, ultrasound examinations, and selected blood tests, will remain free for patients. The move is aimed at streamlining hospital services and generating resources for improving healthcare infrastructure and patient facilities.
However, the decision has sparked concern among many residents who rely on government healthcare institutions for affordable treatment. Patients and social organizations have questioned whether the additional financial burden could affect access to healthcare for economically weaker sections of society.
The introduction of user charges has also led to discussions regarding variations in fees for similar treatments and procedures across different healthcare facilities. Many are seeking greater clarity on the implementation of the new system and its impact on patients.
As the policy takes effect, healthcare authorities are expected to monitor its implementation while addressing concerns raised by the public regarding affordability and accessibility of medical services.
