Ganeshotsav opened across Varanasi on Monday, 14 September 2026, with pran-pratishtha, modak, fruit and kheer bhog, and Atharvashirsha and laksharchan rituals at pandals and temples from the riverfront to inland bazaars. The day marked the start of multi-day Marathi-style and local committee programmes, distinct from any earlier preview of installations alone.

At Brahma Ghat, Shri Kashi Ganeshotsav Committee began its 129th seven-day festival. The idol moved in a palki from Dudhvinayak temple to Mangal Bhavan with kalash rites. An afternoon painting competition was part of the opening slate. Nutan Balak Ganeshotsav Samaj Seva Mandal opened its seven-day run at Eknath Bhavan on Durga Ghat with traditional song, durva sahasranamarchan, and performances by children of Ganesh Vidya Mandir.

Sharada Bhavan at Agastyakunda marked its 98th festival with archana using 21 types of leaves and vegetation, a women’s session, and an evening hasya kavi sammelan on the programme card. Sri Ram Tarak Andhra Ashram at Mansarovar opened its 40th Ganesh Navratra around Siddhi Vinayak sahasranam, drawing South Indian devotees; priests named for the rites included VV Sundar Shastri, VV Vishwanath and Pt Shyam Rao Shastri.

In Thatheri Bazaar, Sherwali Kothi hosted Shri Kashi Maratha Ganesh Utsav Committee’s installation of a six-foot Lalbaugcha Raja idol inside a Bahubali-theme pandal — an opening-day act beyond any prior preview listing. Dashashwamedh’s Shri Ganeshotsav Seva Samiti held leaf and nature puja with Pt Anant Ghodekar and Pt Uday Kanthale; Pt Shadanand Pathak led Atharvashirsha. Durg Vinayak temple at Durgakund offered annual shringar, Atharvashirsha by 11 bhudevas, and fruit-modak bhog at 1 pm.

Crowds also pressed into older city shrines — Bada Ganesh, Chintamani at Sonarpura with its ice tableau, Dhundhiraj and Sakshi Vinayak — as the opening day layered temple visits onto pandal programmes. Common offerings across venues stayed simple and edible: modak, fruit, kheer. Ritual frames varied from sahasravartan and Atharvashirsha to vegetation archana and palki arrival.

Monday’s map is deliberately wide because Ganeshotsav in Kashi is not one pandal. River ghat committees, Maratha samitis, Andhra ashram rites and Durgakund temple shringar ran on the same calendar day. Readers tracking a single neighbourhood should still know the city opened together.

Anniversary numbers on the committees — 129th at Brahma Ghat, 98th at Sharada Bhavan, 40th Navratra at the Andhra Ashram — show how long these calendars have sat in the city’s festive memory. Opening day is when those clocks restart each year with fresh pratistha and bhog, not when a preview poster is printed.

This file stays on opening-day acts. Preview-only programme lists without Monday’s pratistha, bhog and install details are out of scope here. Festive colour does not need invented devotee quotes; the locked committee names, idol sizes, priest names and ritual forms are enough stamp for a city desk.

For households moving between Brahma Ghat, Durga Ghat, Agastyakunda, Mansarovar, Thatheri and Dashashwamedh, the practical line is clear: idols are in, bhog has begun, and the multi-day clocks at each committee have started. Hold that opening-day record.
