Gemini temporary chats stay out of your recent conversation list and Gemini Apps Activity, and Google says they are not used to train its AI models. They are still retained with your account for 72 hours. That distinction answers the main privacy question: temporary means a conversation you cannot return to after leaving, while Google still keeps it briefly for specified service and safety purposes.

QuestionOfficial position
Can I reopen it later? You lose access when you leave the temporary chat.
Does it train Google's models?Google says temporary chats do not.
Who can start one?Signed in users with a personal Google Account.

How to start a Gemini temporary chat

Google's current computer instructions say to open gemini.google.com, select the temporary conversation control beside New chat, type the request and submit it. Look for the temporary chat symbol at the top while working. These steps were checked against the public help page for this guide; no account was accessed and no live conversation was submitted.

Before beginning, decide whether the result needs to become a lasting document. A temporary brainstorming session is a poor place to leave the only copy of tomorrow's workshop outline. Copy the useful answer into your own notes before leaving. Keep the original brief there too, so you can understand later which constraints produced the answer.

For a harmless trial, use this original prompt: “Suggest six names for a fictional college reading club. Explain each name in one sentence and avoid references to real institutions.” Its purpose is to test the workflow without sharing somebody's personal information. Review the answer as draft material, then save only the parts you actually need.

What the 72 hour privacy rule means

The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, which displayed an update date of 26 October 2026 when checked on 1 November 2026, says temporary conversations are held with the account for 72 hours. Google describes responding to the user and protecting Google, users and the public as purposes for that retention. It also says the last 24 hours of a conversation can supply response context.

Those are different clocks serving different purposes. The context window describes material that can inform a reply; the retention period describes how long the conversation remains with the account. Neither gives you a recoverable chat-history entry. Do not interpret the 72 hour period as a deadline during which the conversation can be retrieved from the sidebar.

Google's announcement explaining temporary chats also separates them from personalization: these sessions do not shape the user's Gemini experience through remembered conversation content. The current help page says temporary mode cannot provide personalized replies or save information for future personalization. An ordinary session with activity controls changed is therefore a separate workflow.

Why Gemini temporary chat may be missing

Check the account and the service surface first. Google lists personal accounts as eligible and excludes work and school accounts from this feature. It supports temporary conversations in the Gemini web and mobile apps, while excluding Gemini in Chrome and Gemini in Google Messages. A missing control in one of those settings does not establish that Google has removed the feature for everyone.

There are feature restrictions within temporary mode too. The help page excludes Gems, feedback on a response, and Connected Apps or integrated services that require Keep Activity to be enabled. If your task depends on one of these, check the documentation for that service before building a workflow around a temporary conversation. Do not expect an isolated session to reproduce every feature of a regular one.

A practical decision is to write down three things before starting: what you want answered, whether you need the answer later, and which private details can be left out. Privacy controls do not make a draft accurate. Check names, calculations and source claims before using an answer in a real application or document.
