GURUGRAM: Police have arrested five suspects a day after a 46-year-old man riding a motorcycle was allegedly shot dead on Basai Road, investigators said, describing the case as linked to an alleged gang rivalry.

Police identified the suspects as Praveen Parashar, 45, and his son Pranav Parashar alias Choti, 20, residents of Devilal Colony in Sector 9, who were arrested on Thursday evening. Dev Sharma alias Committee, 22, of Sector 9; Ankit alias Bunty, 19, of Basai; and Utsav, 19, of Bhawani Enclave, were arrested from Garhi Harsaru on Friday, officials said.

According to police, the three men arrested on Friday were riding a motorcycle and allegedly shot the victim, Mahender Singh, when he was riding with his younger son Sahil Singh, 19, on Thursday. Investigators said Praveen is the father of Parv alias Buddy, 18, described by police as leader of the Buddy gang, who was murdered by members of a rival group referred to as the Sunny Mandal gang on 12 January 2025. Police said Praveen's elder son Priyanshu Singh, 22, and 10 members of the Mandal gang were arrested last year in connection with that killing.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Naveen Sharma said Praveen and Pranav had allegedly planned revenge after Parv's murder. "Their original plan was to kill Sahil; however, the suspects missed him and accidentally shot his father," he said, according to the police account.

Sharma said Pranav had allegedly purchased three country-made pistols and ammunition for Rs 21,000 from an arms supplier in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, about three months earlier, provided the arms to three assailants and shared information about Mahender and Sahil's movement. Police said the weapon used in the alleged murder was recovered, while two more pistols were yet to be traced.

All five suspects were produced before a court and taken on police remand for further interrogation, investigators said. The sequence described by police places the alleged planning with the Sector 9 father-son pair and the alleged firing with the three younger men arrested from Garhi Harsaru. Remand will be used to seek the remaining weapons and to test the revenge motive against the January 2025 killing cited by investigators.

The account remains a police version; guilt will be decided by the court after trial. Basai Road is a busy corridor, and the alleged shooting of a motorcyclist riding with his son has put a public stretch at the centre of a case that police link to unfinished gang scores from last year.
