NEW DELHI: Discovery advertises towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg, but Land Rover India's specification page adds an important qualification: maximum towing is limited to 2,500 kg when the 20-inch Style 5011 wheel is fitted. Owners need the specification of their particular vehicle before treating the headline capacity as applicable to it.
| Item | Official figure or qualification |
|---|---|
| Discovery advertised maximum towing | Up to 3,500 kg |
| Specified wheel exception | 20-inch Style 5011, five split-spoke, Gloss Sparkle Silver |
| Towing limit with that wheel | 2,500 kg |
| Coupling-point limit with that wheel | 100 kg |
| Landmark wheel shown on current model page | 20-inch Style 5122, satin dark grey |
| Other qualification | Capability depends on model and engine; nose weight also depends on wheel fitment |
The wheel design matters, not just its diameter
The footnote names a particular wheel style and finish. It does not say that every Discovery on wheels of the same diameter has the reduced limit. The current Landmark description, for example, names Style 5122 wheels. Those are a different design code from the Style 5011 wheels identified in the restriction.
That distinction makes a visual estimate unreliable. Reading only the wheel diameter from a tyre sidewall would not establish the complete wheel specification named in the footnote. The vehicle's build details and the wheel actually fitted need to agree before the published limit can be interpreted confidently.
It would also be wrong to infer that the restriction has been removed simply because another wheel design is shown in a promotional picture. Land Rover's model page qualifies local specification and the availability of equipment. The relevant document is the one applicable to the particular car and its configuration.
Towing capacity and coupling load are different checks
The same specification footnote limits the maximum coupling point to 100 kg with the named wheel. Land Rover's broader towing page calls this nose weight and explains that it varies with model, engine and wheels. It is a separate condition from the maximum trailer-weight figure.
For a family using a Discovery with a caravan or a trailer carrying leisure equipment, that means there is more to check than the weight of what is being pulled. The complete combination must be assessed against the vehicle's applicable limits. A trailer below the advertised towing ceiling does not, by itself, demonstrate compliance with every loading condition.
Land Rover also states that accessories and other items fitted after manufacture affect payload. Its loading guidance says gross vehicle weight and maximum axle loads must not be exceeded when accounting for accessories, occupants, fluids, fuel and cargo. That makes a fully occupied family trip a different loading exercise from a demonstration with an empty vehicle.
What the assistance systems actually help with
The Discovery page presents Advanced Tow Assist as an available aid. Land Rover's towing explainer describes it as a way to display the current and desired trailer trajectory while reversing. Tow Hitch Assist instead helps position the tow ball relative to the hitch using an on-screen graphic.
Those are distinct manoeuvring tasks. Coupling a trailer accurately does not answer how the combination will reverse, and neither function establishes the permitted load. The practical demonstration should therefore distinguish the hitching view, reversing guidance and the configuration's mechanical limits.
Land Rover warns that towing systems are not universally compatible across its vehicles. For an existing Discovery, the accessory needs to be matched to the car, rather than selected solely because it is described as a Land Rover tow bar. Availability of an assistance feature should likewise be checked on the actual vehicle.
Apply Discovery figures to Discovery
The full-size Discovery and Discovery Sport have separate specification information. Our Car price guide covers the smaller model's price context. Our Range Rover Evoque vs Discovery Sport price: Discovery Sport starts lower at Rs 63,37,000 supplies a separate SUV reference. Neither report transfers a towing approval to a Discovery.
The Audi Q7 vs Audi Q5 price: Q5 starts lower at Rs 65,55,000 provides another large-SUV comparison. Similar positioning is not evidence that different models share a towing rating, compatible accessories or loading procedures.
The actionable point in Discovery's published specification is the named wheel exception. Keep the 3,500 kg headline, the Style 5011 restriction and the coupling-load condition together when reviewing the vehicle documentation. This is a reading of the manufacturer's capability information, not an assessment of a particular trailer or permission to tow it on a particular route.
