Varanasi, June 26, 2026: Banaras Hindu University has partnered with Varanasi Smart City to introduce an app-based e-bike and bicycle-sharing facility on the BHU campus, in a move aimed at cleaner and easier mobility for students, teachers, staff and visitors.

The BHU e-bike bicycle facility is expected to support short-distance movement inside the large university campus, where many students and staff members travel between hostels, departments, libraries, laboratories, administrative buildings and hospital areas every day.

Green Mobility Push on BHU Campus

BHU's campus is one of the largest educational campuses in the country, and internal mobility has long depended on walking, cycles, two-wheelers, autos and private vehicles. A shared e-bike and bicycle network could give users a cleaner alternative for routine travel.

The official BHU announcement identifies the initiative as a partnership with Varanasi Smart City for an app-based public bicycle and e-bike sharing network. Reports describe the project as part of a wider effort to promote sustainable transport and reduce dependence on fuel-based vehicles within the campus environment.

How Students and Staff Could Benefit

If implemented well, the system could help students reach classes, laboratories, libraries and hostels more conveniently. It may also help staff and visitors who need to move across different parts of the campus without using private motor vehicles for every short trip.

For many students, affordability and availability will be important. Details such as rental rates, app access, docking stations, operating hours, safety rules and maintenance support will decide how widely the facility is used.

Smart City Link to Sustainable Transport

The project also fits into Varanasi's wider Smart City approach, which has included work on cleaner mobility, digital systems and improved public services. Dalimss News earlier reported on a separate electric bus connection between BHU campus and Cantt railway station, and the new sharing system could become another layer in the city's green transport network.

Unlike large public transport routes, a campus sharing network works best for short trips. It can reduce pressure on internal roads, limit unnecessary two-wheeler movement and encourage healthier travel habits among students.

What Details Are Awaited

The exact launch scale, number of vehicles, docking locations and user charges should be confirmed through official BHU and Varanasi Smart City updates. Users should also wait for instructions on app registration and safety guidelines before using the service.

For now, the partnership signals that BHU is preparing to make campus mobility more sustainable. In a university where thousands of people move across long internal distances daily, a reliable e-bike and bicycle facility could make everyday movement simpler while also supporting cleaner air and a less congested campus.
