BHU Fills 75% of Undergraduate Seats; Final Regular Round Starts August 17

Varanasi: Banaras Hindu University has filled roughly three-quarters of its undergraduate seats after the first admission phase, with about 6,150 places confirmed out of a total near 8,200. Around 2,005 seats remained as the university prepared additional allocation rounds over the next 20 days.

The next regular rounds are expected to move through 12 August and 17 August, followed by spot rounds if vacancies persist. A mop-up round may be used after that. The dates matter, but applicants should keep checking the official admission portal because counselling schedules can shift when fee deadlines, upgrades and withdrawals change the available-seat calculation.

Competition is substantial: about 93,000 candidates applied for BHU’s undergraduate programmes. A large applicant pool does not mean every course will fill at the same speed. Popular combinations in the main campus can close early while seats remain in a different programme or affiliated unit. The remaining 25 per cent is therefore not a single queue moving at one rate.

Candidates offered a seat must pay the admission fee within the stated window. The university’s guidance says an unpaid allotment can be cancelled and the candidate may lose consideration in later rounds. After payment, applicants can choose to freeze the seat or seek an upgrade. If an upgrade does not happen, the already confirmed admission should remain intact.

That distinction is easy to miss in a stressful portal session. Students should use a laptop or desktop where possible, save the payment receipt and take screenshots of the final choice. Browser errors, payment delays and weak mobile connections are common explanations after a deadline, but they do not always restore a cancelled allotment.

Admissions for practice-based courses run on an additional track. The Bachelor of Fine Arts practical test is scheduled for 9 August, while Bachelor of Performing Arts practicals are planned between 8 and 11 August. Candidates should download their admit cards and confirm the reporting venue and materials required for the test.

For families arriving in Varanasi, the administrative calendar affects housing and travel too. A student waiting for an upgrade should be cautious about paying a non-refundable private-hostel deposit before the final campus or course is known. At the same time, delaying every arrangement until the last round can make accommodation more expensive. Clear daily vacancy data from BHU would help families judge that trade-off.

The university has moved quickly through the opening phase. Its next test is communication: each round should show the deadline, upgrade rule, refund position and remaining seats in plain language. For two thousand prospective students, a single clearly worded portal notice can be as consequential as the rank that brought them there.
