VMC Calls Bulk Generators to Sigra for Solid Waste Training Today

The Varanasi Municipal Corporation is holding a training workshop on Tuesday, 29 September, at Dr Sampurnanand Sports Stadium in Sigra for hotels, hospitals, schools and other bulk waste generators on source segregation and mandatory registration under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal said.

The session is aimed at major hotels, restaurants, hospitals, educational institutions, residential societies, commercial establishments and government as well as private offices. These categories generate large volumes of mixed waste every day. Under the 2026 rules, bulk generators are expected to complete registration with the civic body and follow wet and dry segregation at source before waste leaves their premises.

Training will cover wet and dry segregation at source, scientific processing and disposal, and the registration process itself. Organisers have also kept time for questions so that managers and facility heads can clear doubts on paperwork, collection routes and penalties for improper disposal. Nagpal has asked invitees to arrive on time and finish registration without delay, framing the workshop as a step toward stopping improper dumping and keeping the city cleaner.

Bulk generators sit at the centre of urban waste load in a city the size of Varanasi. A hotel kitchen, a hospital ward block or a large residential society can produce more wet waste in a day than several ordinary households combined. When that stream is not separated at source, wet and dry material mix in the collection chain, raising the cost of processing and leaving open dumps that residents notice first after monsoon humidity.

The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, put registration and segregation duties on those generators rather than leaving the entire burden on municipal sweepers and landfill crews. Tuesday's Sigra session is the corporation's push to make that duty practical: explain the forms, walk through wet versus dry categories, and show how scientific processing works once waste reaches authorised facilities.

Sigra's sports stadium hall is a familiar civic venue for large briefings. Seating bulk-generator representatives in one place lets zonal officers and sanitation staff answer the same questions once instead of chasing individual hotels and hospitals across wards. The Q and A block is meant for that: registration portals, collection schedules, and what happens when a generator keeps dumping mixed waste.

Nagpal's attendance appeal also signals that the corporation treats the workshop as compliance work, not a ceremonial seminar. Completing registration after the session is the measurable outcome. The cleaner-city goal only holds if the bulk stream stops leaking into drains, vacant plots and ghat approaches where festival crowds already strain sanitation teams.

The corporation has not yet put out attendance or registration figures. For now, Himanshu Nagpal's message to the bulk generators invited to Dr Sampurnanand Sports Stadium in Sigra is plain: arrive on time, finish registration, and stop improper disposal by separating waste at source.
