Babatpur Logs Storm Tempo Midday Tuesday; Wednesday Opens Misty Near 2 km

Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport’s METAR sheet on Tuesday pushed past simple morning mist into a brief thunderstorm-rain tempo, then Wednesday opened grey again with visibility stuck near two kilometres.

Early Tuesday still looked like the late-monsoon pattern already familiar this week: mist or haze, temperatures climbing through the high 20s toward about 31°C by mid-morning, and visibility improving toward four to five kilometres under haze. Around 4 pm IST the picture changed. A report near 1030 UTC listed about 30°C, mist, scattered cloud at 2,000 feet, a few cumulonimbus at 3,000 feet, a broken higher deck, and a TEMPO group calling for 1,500 metres in light thunderstorm rain. That is the first clear storm-tempo signature on this week’s Babatpur feed after quieter Monday readings.

Through Tuesday evening and overnight the storm language dropped away. METARs settled back to mist with visibility around 2 to 2.5 kilometres, light or calm winds, and temperatures near 27–28°C. Cloud was mostly few at 2,000 feet with a scattered layer near 10,000 feet. Pressure hovered close to 1006–1007 hPa.

Wednesday’s pre-dawn and early-morning sequence, through roughly 7.30 am IST, stayed misty. Temperatures held 27–28°C with dew points only a degree or so cooler. Visibility sat at 2,000 metres for several hours before a 0730 IST group lifted it to about 2.5 kilometres in mist, with an east-northeast wind near nine knots. The sheet still showed few cloud at 2,000 feet and scattered higher cloud.

These figures come from the official VEBN half-hourly and hourly METARs redistributed by the Aviation Weather Center. They describe instruments at Babatpur, not a ward-by-ward city rainfall map. They do, however, mark Tuesday as more unsettled than the Monday–Tuesday mist story already published, and they show Wednesday’s commute starting under a soft grey curtain rather than under clear air.

METARs remain observations. They do not replace the India Meteorological Department’s East Uttar Pradesh subdivision warnings for the coming heavy-rain window. What the airport log does confirm is that Varanasi’s Tuesday afternoon carried a brief storm tempo aloft, and that Wednesday morning reopened with mist near two kilometres and sticky humidity.

Drivers on the airport road will know the difference between Tuesday’s taller cloud and Wednesday’s flat mist. Cumulonimbus in a midday METAR is the vertical tell; a TEMPO for thunderstorm rain is the short-period hazard for aircraft and for anyone caught on two-wheelers under the approach path. That the tempo did not dominate the whole afternoon is also in the sheet — later groups slipped back to ordinary mist — but the CB and TEMPO lines are why Tuesday earns its own write-up beside the earlier Monday–Tuesday mist story.

Humidity stayed high either way. Dew points in the mid-to-high 20s leave little gap under the air temperature, which is why mist reforms overnight even after a warmer, hazier midday. Pressure near 1006–1007 hPa and light winds fit a moist boundary layer rather than a strong monsoon surge. If Wednesday afternoon heating punches through, visibility may lift while the air still feels wet — a Babatpur pattern as old as the runway.

Farmers and outdoor contractors watching late-monsoon humidity will read the same theme in the dew-point numbers. Anyone with an early flight on Wednesday should treat the two-kilometre mist groups as the operative picture until later METARs show a clear rise. The sheet does not forecast Thursday; it only locks what the instruments already measured from Tuesday’s storm tempo into Wednesday’s grey start.
