Varanasi School Team Prepares for Subroto Cup

VARANASI: Vikas Inter College’s under-17 boys’ football team is preparing to carry Uttar Pradesh’s colours at the 65th Subroto Cup International Football Tournament. The squad’s announced departure for Delhi was Sunday, September 13, after a 15-day training camp.

The preparation camp ended on Friday under coach Rashid Anwar. Work concentrated on passing, finishing, fitness and decisions made during a match, with specific attention to the timing of chipped shots and the delivery of through passes.

The local team announcement places the start of its competition programme on September 15 at Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. A confirmed departure update, opening opponent and match-by-match schedule were not included in the material available for this report.

Small decisions, larger consequences

The Subroto Cup organisers describe the tournament as an annual inter-school competition that began in 1960. It is named after Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, India’s first Indian Chief of Air Staff, and brings school teams from Indian states and overseas into the competition.

The organiser’s website identifies the 2026 event as the 65th edition. For the Varanasi players, representing Uttar Pradesh means entering as a school side with a state-level responsibility, rather than as an assembled professional club.

Preparation can establish routines and confidence, but it cannot settle a result in advance. The immediate milestones are the journey, confirmation of fixtures and the first appearance. As results become available, the useful measure will be how the team applies its passing, movement and composure against opposition, not the optimism surrounding its departure.
