Varanasi Ropeway Fare Fixed: Cantt to Godowlia Ride to Cost Rs 50

Varanasi, June 26, 2026: The Varanasi ropeway fare has reportedly been fixed, with the full ride from Cantt to Godowlia expected to cost Rs 50. The fare decision is a key step before the much-awaited urban ropeway becomes a regular public transport option for residents, pilgrims and tourists moving toward the old city.
According to reports, the minimum station-to-station fare is expected to be Rs 10, while the highest fare on the Cantt-Godowlia stretch will be Rs 50. The route is designed to connect the railway station side of the city with the congested Godowlia area, where road travel often becomes slow because of traffic pressure and narrow approach roads.
Fare Notification Issued
Reports indicate that the fare structure covers travel between stations including Cantt, Vidyapeeth, Rathyatra and Godowlia. The full Cantt to Godowlia ride has been reported at Rs 50, while shorter movement between nearby stations may cost less.
The ropeway project has been described as one of India's first major urban public-transport ropeway systems. The corridor is expected to reduce the travel time between Cantt and Godowlia from the usual road journey, which can stretch during peak hours, to a shorter aerial transit once the system is fully operational for passengers.
Kashi Smart Pass Discount
Some reports also mention a 20 percent discount through the Kashi Smart Pass. If applied as reported, the Cantt-Godowlia fare would come down to Rs 40 for eligible pass users. Passengers should verify the final conditions, card eligibility and recharge process before relying on the discount.
There may also be separate provisions for premium gondola or special passenger services, but only officially confirmed fare categories should be treated as final. At this stage, the most important verified point is that a basic fare range of Rs 10 to Rs 50 has reportedly been fixed for the ordinary route.
What the Ropeway Means for City Traffic
Varanasi's central areas often face heavy pressure because of pilgrims, local commuters, school traffic, market movement and tourist vehicles. A functioning ropeway between Cantt and Godowlia could give passengers another way to reach the old city without depending only on road transport.
The project is also expected to support crowd management during festivals and peak tourism periods. If integrated well with buses, e-rickshaws, parking facilities and pedestrian routes, the ropeway may reduce some pressure on roads leading toward Kashi Vishwanath, Dashashwamedh, Godowlia and nearby markets.
Passenger Facilities and Safety Features
Officials have earlier presented the ropeway as a modern transport system with station facilities, ticketing support and safety arrangements. Reports around the fare notification also mention passenger amenities such as cloakroom facilities at the Cantt station, though users should check the final rules at the station before travel.
The ropeway's success will depend not only on the fare but also on reliability, safety, crowd handling and last-mile connectivity. For Varanasi, the Rs 50 fare announcement brings the project closer to everyday public use, but passengers should wait for official operating dates and service instructions before planning travel around it.
