Nodal Officer Rides Cantt-Godowlia Gondola on Ropeway Check

District nodal officer Dr Raj Shekhar and District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar inspected Varanasi's Cantt-Godowlia urban ropeway on Monday by riding a gondola along the corridor. They directed officials to finish residual work quickly and to keep quality and safety standards under tight watch.

The ropeway is planned as a public-transport link of about 3.75 to 3.85 kilometres from the Cantonment railway station side to Godowlia Chowk, with a journey time near 15 minutes once passenger service begins. Five stations are on the alignment: Cantonment railway station, Kashi Vidyapith, Rath Yatra, Girjaghar and Godowlia Chowk. Earlier project updates put civil progress near 94 percent, with station finishing still pending.

Dr Raj Shekhar, who also holds planning secretary and economics-and-statistics director-general roles at the state level while acting as the district's nodal officer for the project, used the gondola ride to see the corridor as a passenger would. The DM accompanied the inspection. Instructions afterward stressed campaign-mode completion of leftover tasks and continuous monitoring so that construction and future operations meet the laid-down safety and quality norms.

Urban ropeways are uncommon in Indian city transport. Officials have described the Varanasi corridor as the country's first urban public-transport ropeway and among a small set worldwide. That claim sits with the project brief; what Monday added was not a new length figure but a senior on-corridor check while finishing work continues.

For Cantt passengers who now crawl through old-city traffic toward Godowlia, a 15-minute aerial hop would change access to the temple core if reliability and safety hold. That is why the nodal officer's emphasis on standards matters more than a photo on a gondola. Residual station work, evacuation procedures and evacuation drills will decide when trial runs turn into public tickets.

Trial activity and system testing have already been part of the late-construction phase in recent weeks. Monday's inspection fits that sequence: ride the line, list what is unfinished, order speed with quality. District administration has not announced a final public-opening date in the briefing around the visit; November had been discussed earlier as a completion window before testing and safety clearances.

Until tickets go on sale, the ropeway remains a worksite over five stations and roughly two dozen towers. The Monday gondola ride by Dr Raj Shekhar and DM Satyendra Kumar is the clearest recent signal that the corridor is being judged from the cabin as well as from the ground.

Godowlia traders and Cantt-side commuters have watched the towers rise for months. Monday's cabin inspection tells them the project is being closed out under direct district attention, even if the public timetable still waits on safety clearances after the last finishing items.
