Varanasi Cracks Down on Coaching Centres, Eight Institutions Sealed Over Safety and Building Violations

Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) has launched a major enforcement drive against coaching institutes in the city, sealing eight institutions, including prominent names such as Allen, Aakash and Mahendra. The action follows intensified inspections after the recent coaching-centre fire incident in Lucknow, which raised concerns about student safety and emergency preparedness in educational facilities across Uttar Pradesh.

Joint inspection teams from the VDA and Fire Department conducted checks at several coaching centres operating in different parts of Varanasi. During the inspections, authorities reportedly found multiple violations, including buildings operating without approved maps, inadequate fire-safety arrangements, improper storage of combustible materials, and emergency exits that did not meet prescribed safety standards. Some centres were functioning on upper floors with only a single, narrow access route, raising concerns about evacuation during emergencies.

Officials stated that student safety remains the top priority and that institutions failing to comply with building and safety regulations will face strict action. The crackdown has sparked a wider discussion on infrastructure standards in coaching hubs, where thousands of students from Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states come every year to prepare for competitive examinations. Authorities have indicated that inspections will continue and that compliance with safety norms will be monitored closely in the coming days.
