Varanasi Cantt Station to Get Full-Length Platform Shed Next Year

Varanasi: Passengers at Varanasi Cantt railway station are expected to receive better protection from sun and rain through a full-length platform shed planned for next year. The improvement addresses a basic comfort gap at one of eastern Uttar Pradesh’s busiest rail gateways, where travellers can be forced to wait beyond the covered section when long trains stop.

A platform roof may sound minor beside a new terminal or train, but its value is immediate. In summer, exposed concrete becomes intensely hot; during the monsoon, a coach position a few metres beyond the shelter can leave elderly passengers, children and luggage in heavy rain. Full-length coverage also reduces last-minute crowding under the existing roof.

The project will have to be sequenced around an operating station. Varanasi Cantt handles regular passenger movement, cleaning, parcel activity and train turnarounds. Construction zones must be separated clearly, overhead work scheduled safely and platform access preserved. Temporary inconvenience is likely, but communication can prevent it from becoming confusion.

Design details matter. A shed should provide shade while allowing heat and smoke to disperse, channel rainwater into functioning drains and leave space for signs, cameras and electrical equipment. Leaking joints or blocked downpipes can reproduce waterlogging under a new roof. Maintenance access should therefore be part of the original design, not an afterthought.

Passenger amenities must also work as a system. Better shelter is most useful when coach-position displays are accurate, seating is available and lifts or foot overbridges remain accessible. The railway should review whether lighting, drinking water and tactile paths continue through the newly covered length. A roof that serves only able-bodied passengers standing near the centre would fall short of the opportunity.

The reported timeline points to next year, but rail projects are vulnerable to procurement and traffic-block delays. Publishing contract milestones and platform-wise phases would help passengers know what to expect. Varanasi Cantt is often a visitor’s first physical encounter with the city. A complete, well-maintained shed will not transform the station on its own, but it will make that arrival safer and more humane in the two kinds of weather passengers remember most: fierce heat and sudden rain.

During construction, station managers should provide repeated announcements and visible signs about temporary coach positions or closed areas. Contractors must keep tools and materials outside passenger paths and restore surfaces immediately after each phase. A project intended to improve safety cannot be allowed to create avoidable hazards while it is being built.
