Railway Board planning for a sleeper Vande Bharat Express between Varanasi Junction (Cantt) and New Delhi has moved ahead after an earlier Banaras-station option lacked maintenance depth. Two sleeper Vande Bharat rakes are available in this national context. Final route consensus is not yet locked. The working hope inside railway circles is a start before the festive window of Dussehra and Diwali. Officials have acknowledged feasibility work quietly while stressing that a full authorised public announcement is still pending.

This is a planning and feasibility story, not an inauguration. Collapsing the two would mislead readers who already watch every Vande Bharat rumour out of Kashi. What is locked today is Board-level movement toward Varanasi Junction, a preference for Cantt’s stronger maintenance base, two sleeper rakes in play, and no complete authorised confirmation of dates or intermediate stops.

Banaras station had been in an earlier sketch for a sleeper Vande Bharat link to New Delhi. Feasibility checks there ran into the absence of suitable maintenance arrangements. Preparation has therefore shifted toward Varanasi Junction, where maintenance depth already supports existing premium services. That shift is administrative and technical, not a slight to Banaras’s current long-distance map.

Varanasi Junction already runs two Vande Bharat services and the thrice-weekly Mahamana. Banaras handles Kashi Vishwanath Express, Shivganga Express and the Banaras–New Delhi Superfast, among other trains. Sunday evening overcrowding on Delhi-bound services continues despite that spread. A sleeper Vande Bharat, if and when authorised, would sit in that demand pocket — overnight comfort on a premium rake, not a substitute for every crowded general coach.

Route finalisation remaining open matters. Board steps and rake availability do not by themselves freeze via stations or a timetable. Railway officials’ own caution — feasibility acknowledged, full public authorisation not yet out — is the correct reading frame. This desk will not invent a inaugural date, a fare chart or a stoppage list.

Festive-season timing is the pressure window railway planners keep naming: Dussehra through Diwali travel. Whether the sleeper Vande Bharat clears paperwork before that rush is still a live question. Two rakes available nationally do not mean both are free for Varanasi tomorrow; allocation and maintenance readiness at Cantt will decide how fast a paper plan becomes a running train.

Maintenance depth is the quiet decider. A sleeper Vande Bharat needs stabling, attention and turnaround support that Banaras could not show in the feasibility check. Cantt’s existing premium stock already draws that support, which is why Board preparation has tilted there. Readers should treat that as an engineering preference recorded in planning talk, not as a finished traffic notice.

For passengers who already fight Sunday-evening queues toward Delhi, the practical takeaway is measured: Board work is real, Cantt is the preferred terminal for maintenance reasons, Banaras’s earlier plan has been set aside on facility grounds, and no authorised launch order is in hand yet. Hold the planning stamp. Wait for the confirmation before treating the service as booked fact.
