Varanasi Air Quality Remains Poor Amid Intense Heat, Raising Health Concerns

Varanasi is witnessing deteriorating air quality even as the city continues to experience intense summer heat. Over the past ten days, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has remained above normal levels, causing concern among residents, particularly those suffering from respiratory and heart-related illnesses.
According to recent air quality data, the city's average AQI was recorded at 106 on Wednesday, while it had reached 186 a day earlier. Among the most affected areas, Ardali Bazar reported an AQI of 117, with PM2.5 levels at 218 and PM10 levels at 172. In Bhelupur, the AQI stood at 119, while PM10 reached 219. Maldahiya and the BHU area recorded relatively better air quality, but pollution levels in several parts of the city remained above prescribed safety standards.
Health experts have warned that PM2.5 and PM10 particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and may aggravate asthma, allergies, and cardiovascular conditions. Former Head of the Chest and TB Department at BHU, Prof. G.N. Srivastava, advised people, especially patients with respiratory and heart diseases, to take precautions and cover their faces in dusty areas. Experts believe that without effective pollution control measures, worsening air quality could pose a significant public health challenge for Varanasi in the coming days.
