City Logs Over 60 mm Rain and Cool Spell; Lightning Hits Akhari Principal’s Roof

Varanasi’s mid-week grey turned measurable on Friday’s books. The city logged more than 60 millimetres of rain in twenty-four hours, temperatures slipped into a cool 20–25°C band, and easterly winds ran near 41 kilometres an hour — enough to make Banaras feel closer to an early winter morning than late September.

Thursday’s official maximum stopped at 27.0°C, about 6.3 degrees below normal for the date. The minimum sat near 23 to 23.6°C, a little under the usual floor. Humidity stayed high through the wet spell. The cool air arrived with the same easterly feed that kept Babatpur on light rain and mist for much of Friday.

Lightning made the weather personal in Akhari. A strike hit the roof of the house of Gopal Pandey, principal of Parvati Inter College. The beam, air-conditioner, solar panels, inverter, submersible-pump starter and other household electrical fittings were damaged. No injury was reported. Neighbours treated it as a sharp reminder that thunderstorm language on the warning board is not abstract when a cell sits over a colony.

The Uttar Pradesh regional meteorological centre had already been carrying a yellow alert for strong rain with lightning and wind into the weekend. Saturday’s national subdivision table for East Uttar Pradesh went further, placing Extremely Heavy Rain on 26 September. Together, the millimetre total, the cool anomaly and the Akhari strike sketch a city that has taken a proper monsoon punch rather than a passing shower.

Low wards that waterlog after short bursts will watch Sunday’s Heavy Rain cell as closely as Saturday’s extreme wording. Electricity crews dealing with snapped lines in the rural belt and municipal teams clearing silt on the ghats are working under the same weather system. This brief does not invent ward-by-ward flood depths; it records the city rainfall wrap, the temperature departure, the wind figure and the named lightning damage.

Farmers bringing produce into the city’s mandis and parents navigating school-holiday roads share the same saturated ground. Shopkeepers who lost hours to wet floors on Friday will watch the weekend cells before restocking perishable stock on open footpaths. If another severe burst crosses before Monday’s clear window on the East UP board, the next damage ledger will sit on top of this one.
