Xiaomi now has two Redmi 5G phones in India priced Rs 3,000 apart, and on the surface they look very alike. Both have a 6.9-inch 120Hz screen, a 50MP main camera, IP64 and HyperOS 3. The Redmi 17C 5G starts at Rs 20,999 on mi.com and goes on sale on 7 October. The Redmi 17 5G starts at Rs 23,999 and is already on sale. That is the price as of 6 October 2026, 1:50 AM IST, for both.

So is the cheaper one the smart buy, or is the Redmi 17 worth the extra Rs 3,000? We compared the two using only Xiaomi's official India specification pages.

Prices and variants

The Redmi 17C 5G buy page shows Rs 20,999 for the 4GB plus 128GB model in Coffee Brew. A 6GB plus 128GB option is listed, but its price was not shown when we checked. The page carries a "Notify Me" button, since the sale opens on 7 October.

The Redmi 17 5G buy page shows Rs 23,999 for the 6GB plus 128GB model. An 8GB plus 128GB variant is also listed. The phone is available to add to cart now.

Both pages show a "marketing price" of Rs 39,999. That is Xiaomi's reference figure. Plan around the selling price, not the struck-out number.

Note that the Rs 3,000 gap compares a 4GB phone with a 6GB phone. If the 6GB Redmi 17C ends up close to Rs 23,999, the choice gets easier. We will know when Xiaomi shows that price.

Where the Redmi 17 pulls ahead

Battery and charging. This is the biggest difference. Xiaomi lists a 7,900 mAh (typical) battery on the Redmi 17 with 45W charging and a 45W charger in the box. It also supports 22.5W wired reverse charging, so you can top up earbuds or a friend's phone. The Redmi 17C has a 6,000 mAh (typical) battery with 33W charging and a charger in the box, and 10W reverse charging.

Processor. The Redmi 17 uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 on a 4nm process, with Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 cores and a top speed of 2.4GHz. The Redmi 17C uses MediaTek's Dimensity 6300 on a 6nm process, with Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 cores, also at up to 2.4GHz. On paper the Redmi 17 has the newer, more efficient chip.

Brightness and memory. The Redmi 17 lists 825 nits in high brightness mode, against 810 nits on the 17C, which is a small gap. More useful is the memory: the Redmi 17 starts with 6GB of RAM and goes up to 8GB, while the 17C starts at 4GB. Both use LPDDR4X memory and UFS 2.2 storage.

Where the Redmi 17C wins

Weight and thickness. The bigger battery comes at a cost. Xiaomi lists the Redmi 17 at 232g and 8.8mm thick. The Redmi 17C is 211g and 7.99mm. That 21g is noticeable over a day in your pocket.

Bluetooth and audio. The 17C lists Bluetooth 5.4 with LDAC support. The Redmi 17's page lists Bluetooth 5.1. If you use good wireless headphones, the 17C's spec sheet reads better.

SIM and storage. The 17C has a dedicated dual SIM plus microSD slot, so you can use two SIM cards and a memory card together. The Redmi 17 uses a hybrid slot, which means choosing between a second SIM and a memory card. The Redmi 17 does support larger cards, up to 2TB against 1TB on the 17C.

In the box. Xiaomi's package list for the 17C includes a protective case along with the charger and cable. The Redmi 17's list names the phone, the 45W adapter, the cable and a SIM tool, with no case. It is a small saving, but a case is the first thing most buyers add.

Screen detail. Xiaomi's 17C page lists a 1600 x 720 resolution, which is HD+, plus 83 percent NTSC colour gamut. The Redmi 17's specification page did not list a resolution when we checked, so we cannot say whether it is sharper.

What is the same

Both have a 17.53 cm (6.9-inch) display with up to 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling, a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 lens, an 8MP front camera, IP64 splash and dust resistance, a side fingerprint sensor, a 3.5mm headphone jack, FM radio and HyperOS 3. Neither is waterproof: Xiaomi's footnotes warn against immersing either phone.

Colours differ, if that matters to you. The Redmi 17C 5G comes in Dark Night, Coffee Brew and Purple Dawn. The Redmi 17 5G comes in Absolute Black, Endless Blue and Eternal Orange, the shade in the image above.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the Redmi 17 5G if battery life is your top priority. A heavy user, a delivery rider or someone who travels a lot will get real value from the bigger battery and faster charging, and the extra RAM helps the phone age better.

Choose the Redmi 17C 5G if you want a lighter phone, use two SIM cards with a memory card, or simply want to save money. For calls, WhatsApp, UPI and YouTube, it covers the basics.
