Nothing plans to open Essential Apps more widely in the first quarter of 2027, provided testing goes well. An 8 October update from its software product team says the widget-building tool remains in closed beta, even as its rebuilt mobile app arrives with Nothing OS 5.0. For Indian users, receiving the operating-system update will not itself unlock immediate access.
The official development update says more applicants will be admitted in the coming weeks. Approved participants will receive a welcome email. The wider-access ambition covers Nothing phone users running OS 5.0, with the timing expressly dependent on the beta's progress. It is a plan for a future release, not a confirmed launch day.
Widgets built around a small task
Essential Apps lets users describe a widget and have the builder deploy it on their device. Nothing's official guide recommends small, single-purpose ideas such as a countdown, calendar view or a glanceable weather display. It describes home-screen tiles, rather than a replacement for a full application with many screens and functions.
The October update says users can start with text, speech or a reference image, then preview and deploy the result. It lists 2x2, 2x4 and 2x5 layouts, with access to native calendar, contacts and gallery data as well as information from the web.
Check the India software schedule separately
Nothing's India OS page places Phone (3) in the mid-October general-release window. Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro and Phone (3a) follow in early November. Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus are listed for mid-November.
Phone (3a) Lite is scheduled for late December, while Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro appear in the mid-January group. The company calls these timings indicative and says rollout can vary by region and carrier. The OS list does not establish a separate Essential Apps commitment for CMF devices.
Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 will not receive OS 5.0 because their major software-support periods have ended, according to the same page. The Essential Apps requirement therefore cannot be read as covering every older Nothing handset.
Nothing also describes gradual access and a waitlist for the builder. The immediate check is both software eligibility and beta admission. Installing an OS beta is a separate decision: the India page warns of stability, battery and performance issues, recommends a backup and says rolling back erases data.
Permissions, revisions and unfinished features
The guide says a widget asks for permission when it first needs calendar, location, camera or microphone access. It also lists contacts and gallery among available on-device capabilities. An idea that uses personal information should be assessed on the permissions it actually requests, rather than assuming every home-screen widget has identical access.
Results can vary even when the same prompt is repeated. Nothing recommends specifying the behaviour, data and layout, then refining the result. Its guide acknowledges failed builds and odd rendering. A beta usage cap also applies, although the guide does not give a numerical allowance that users can rely on.
Web-connected examples include weather, transport information and cricket data. The guide says other searches may work where the builder can retrieve an online source without authentication. That description does not promise a working connection to every account-based service or app.
Community sharing is also changing. New widget publishing on Playground is paused while Nothing works towards a 2027 relaunch. The team says it may publish a handful of community widgets before the end of this year.
The separate development roadmap still marks changes to widget shapes, onboarding and the building interface as planned. Other entries retain earlier target quarters without a completed status. Those dates should not be treated as proof that a feature has shipped. The page marks improved web-search accuracy as shipped, while showing native-app deep links and visible usage limits as work in progress.
For owners checking their handset generation, Dalimss News has separate coverage of the Nothing Phone (4a) and Phone (4b) variants and the Phone (3a) India listing. Those hardware reports do not establish beta admission. The useful distinction today is between a phone's OS timetable and an invitation to use this particular tool.
