NHAI Floats Rs 81 Lakh Tender for Hero Honda Chowk Road

GURUGRAM: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has floated a tender of around Rs 81 lakh to repair the badly broken 2.4 km stretch between Umang Bhardwaj Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk, a link that carries heavy industrial and commercial traffic through the city.

Officials said the monsoon tore up large parts of the road, and sewage overflowing from a nearby colony made it worse by opening up big potholes. Commuters who use the stretch daily have also complained about dust from the damaged surface.

Under the plan, about 1.6 km of the carriageway will be relaid with bitumen. The concrete sections will be repaired, and concrete blocks will be laid on one portion that floods often and keeps breaking down.

"A tender has been floated for repair of this 2.4km stretch between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk. Around 1.6km of the road surface will be relaid with bitumen, while other portions of the road, which are made of concrete, will be repaired. We also plan to install concrete blocks on a stretch which is prone to waterlogging and frequently gets damaged," an NHAI official said.

The official said the bids would be opened next week and the work was expected to be finished within a month.

## Second repair this year

This is not the first patch job on the road in 2026. In February, NHAI began recarpeting the same corridor after GMDA approved Rs 77 lakh and handed the highway authority the mandate for repairs. An NHAI survey from June 2025 had found around 1,720 metres of the stretch in poor condition across both carriageways, with damaged patches near the Khandsa junction, the power substation, Sector 10A and Pataudi and Khandsa Road. That work was delayed at the time by a leaking sewer line.

Seven months on, officials are once again pointing to sewage overflow and rain as the reasons the surface has given way.

## Permanent fix waits on Chandigarh

NHAI describes the new tender as an interim measure. The authority is waiting for the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to decide whether the corridor should get an elevated road or a rebuilt surface road.

"As soon as the final nod is obtained from the authority, we will start working on it," the NHAI official said. A senior GMDA official said the proposal was under final consideration of the higher authorities in Chandigarh and a decision was expected soon.

The road is also part of the Gurugram Metro corridor. Earlier this month, NHAI and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam were shifting 32 high-tension power lines and feeders off the carriageway between the two chowks to make room for Metro construction, with NHAI targeting the end of September for the feeders under its scope. Any permanent road design will have to fit around that alignment.

For now, those driving between Sector 10A, Khandsa and NH-48 can expect another round of resurfacing once the contract is awarded.
