The Ministry of Earth Sciences says all ten of its research institutes are participating in AcSIR’s current doctoral enrolment cycle under a common academic partnership. The announcement, issued on October 19, concerns an agreement executed on August 21 and declared at an October 13 ceremony in New Delhi. For prospective researchers, the practical question is which institute’s subject and funding requirements they meet, rather than treating the partnership as a single unrestricted PhD offer.

Students will conduct research at the ministry’s institutes with scientists recognised as AcSIR faculty. The Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research will award the doctorate, with the host institution named on the certificate. The framework covers fields including weather prediction, polar science and marine resources. It also provides for students to be credited as inventors when their research generates intellectual property.

Institute eligibility is not interchangeable

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology’s current notice illustrates why the announcement should not be read as every institute’s first AcSIR intake: it cites an agreement dated January 25, 2023. For January 2027, the Pune institute advertises 30 regular national-fellowship positions in Physical Sciences, focused on weather and climate. Of the 30 positions, one is reserved for candidates with benchmark disabilities. The category allocation is 14 unreserved, eight OBC, four SC, two ST and two EWS.

Its qualifying routes include specified science postgraduate degrees, an MTech in atmospheric or oceanic sciences or related subjects, or a master’s in any engineering branch. Candidates must also have studied physics or mathematics at bachelor’s level. Minimum marks are 55% for General/EWS and 50% for OBC non-creamy layer, SC, ST, third-gender and disability applicants, without rounding.

The National Centre for Earth Science Studies call, listed on its website on October 16, offers five regular national-fellowship positions in Physical Sciences for earth, weather and climate research. Four are unreserved and one is for OBC applicants. Its engineering route is narrower: the master’s must include a specialisation in hydrology, water resources or a related subject.

Other accepted qualifications include specified science postgraduate degrees and MTech subjects covering earth, atmospheric and oceanic sciences, geology and geophysics. Physics or mathematics at bachelor’s level is also required. Applicants should therefore check the actual subject list rather than assume that IITM’s broader engineering route applies here. The centre identifies itself as an AcSIR associate academic centre; its notice does not announce a separate degree-awarding arrangement.

A CMLRE notice dated October 18 brings a different research focus. The Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology in Kochi is seeking researchers in marine living resources for AcSIR doctorates in Biological, Physical and Chemical Sciences. Its qualification list includes marine biology, fisheries science, zoology, aquaculture, biotechnology, several chemistry disciplines, mathematics, physics, physical oceanography and bioinformatics. The specified route is a two-year master’s after a three-year science bachelor’s, or equivalent. These are subject-specific entry requirements, not an invitation to substitute any postgraduate qualification.

CMLRE also requires a valid national-level fellowship. Candidates with provisional fellowships may apply, but if approval does not follow, continuation would be self-sponsored and the institute will not provide financial assistance in that situation. Its minimum marks are 55% for General/EWS and 50% for OBC non-creamy layer, SC, ST, third-gender and disability applicants, without rounding. Permission to apply with provisional fellowship status therefore does not guarantee funding.

Application fees and the selection calendar

The central January 2027 brochure sets October 31 as the application deadline. Application fees are Rs 1,000 for General/OBC/EWS and Rs 500 for SC/ST/PwD and women candidates, checked on October 21 at 1:40 pm IST. Applicants should retain their AcSIR application number and acknowledgement. Multiple programmes are permitted where eligible, but only one application per programme; duplicate applications can lead to rejection. The calendar records a September 10 portal opening, not an October 19 launch.

The published calendar places shortlist notifications on November 17 to 20 and institute tests or interviews between November 25 and December 18. Final results are scheduled for December 30, with selected applicants confirming seats through tuition payment by January 6, 2027. Academic activities begin on January 27.

IBAB’s January PhD intake and IIT Delhi’s research admissions, covered separately by Dalimss News, have their own rules and should not be conflated with this process.
