IIT Delhi is accepting applications from Indian candidates for its second-semester 2026-27 PhD and MS (Research) intake until 4 pm on October 29. Applications opened on October 9, so this is an ongoing admission opportunity. Full-time and part-time routes are available, subject to seats. An application correction window is scheduled from October 30 to November 1.
The advertisement lists an application charge of Rs 200 per form for General, OBC and EWS candidates and Rs 50 for SC, ST and PwD candidates, with bank charges borne by applicants. Applications are online only, and hard copies of the form and fee receipt are not required. Foreign nationals have a separate application route. The fee figures were checked on October 18 at 3:35 pm IST. Separately, the brochure says non-sponsored full-time PhD students may be considered for teaching/research assistantships of Rs 37,000 monthly for the first two years and Rs 42,000 for the next three, subject to performance and other conditions.
Eligibility and department-level dates
The semester information brochure distinguishes eligibility by qualification. Its general-category PhD minimum is 60% or a 6.00 CGPA for specified master's qualifications, against 70% or 7.00 for listed bachelor's routes. National examination requirements and exemptions vary. For SC, ST and PwD applicants, those thresholds fall to 55% or 5.50 and 65% or 6.50 respectively. Departments can set higher shortlisting standards. Final-year applicants may apply provisionally if they complete the required qualification before registration. Recognition is another check: Dalimss News has covered UGC's fake-university list and changes to recognised degree titles.
Interview dates need particular care. The institute brochure gives December 9 to 16 as its test/interview range, with orientation and registration on December 31 and classes from January 1, 2027. However, the Energy Science and Engineering notice gives December 3 and 4 as tentative interview dates. It specifies offline interviews for shortlisted national candidates and online interviews for international candidates. The two published schedules differ; applicants should obtain the department's confirmed date before arranging travel.
The energy department says its current-semester shortlisting criteria and shortlisted-candidate lists will be uploaded later. Previous-semester criteria are offered only as background, not as the rules governing this intake. For candidates travelling for selection, the notice says limited paid hostel accommodation may be available on a first-come basis. It lists Rs 750 per day including food, with bedding charged separately, as checked at 3:35 pm IST on October 18. Further accommodation details are still due, so availability is not assured.
Documents, payment and housing
The application FAQ gives document instructions. Documents must be PDFs below 2 MB, and filenames should avoid spaces or additional full stops. Its checklist includes date-of-birth evidence, qualifying certificates and marksheets, a recent photograph, national-examination scorecards and applicable category or disability certificates. The statement of purpose concerns the proposed PhD research. The thesis abstract instead concerns the project or thesis from the qualifying degree. For uncertain discipline choices, it directs applicants to their postgraduate programme coordinator.
After mandatory entries, the FAQ directs applicants to preview and submit the form, return home and complete the payment shown as incomplete. Successful fee payment changes that status to complete; an unpaid application is not considered. It also distinguishes semester SGPA entries from the overall CGPA field. Final-semester applicants without final results may enter their pre-final performance and explain this in the remarks. For a name mismatch between a scorecard and degree certificate, the FAQ specifies the qualifying-degree name.
Longer-term housing needs a separate plan. The current admissions page warns of a severe postgraduate hostel shortage and says an admission offer does not guarantee on-campus accommodation. It seeks to provide shared rooms, where available, for admitted women, students with disabilities and foreign nationals. Allotment follows generation of the entry number, with confirmation dependent on paying applicable charges within the stated window. The page says eligible residents can move in one or two days before registration or orientation. Off-campus accommodation operates independently of IIT Delhi; students staying outside may use a campus mess through a monthly subscription.
