Education Ministry invites applications for Director of IIT Delhi; last date 31 October

The Ministry of Education has invited applications for the post of Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. The last date for applications to reach the Department of Higher Education is 31 October 2026.

The advertisement, issued by Technical Section I of the Department of Higher Education, describes the Director as the academic and administrative head of the institute. It asks for someone with the leadership experience to run an Institute of National Importance.

Eligibility in brief

Applicants should hold a PhD with a first class or equivalent at the preceding degree, preferably in a branch of engineering. In exceptional cases, candidates with degrees in science, mathematics or management may be considered.

The notice seeks an outstanding academic record and a minimum of 10 years' teaching experience as a Professor in a reputed engineering or technology institute or university. Candidates should have guided PhD students. A minimum of five years' administrative experience and leadership qualities are also expected.

Applicants should preferably be less than 60 years of age on the last date for receipt of applications. The post carries a fixed pay of Rs 2,25,000 per month, with allowances as per rules.

Interested candidates must apply in the prescribed format. The packet should include a detailed resume covering research, teaching, industry-academia collaboration and administrative work, a two-page justification for the candidature, a two-page vision statement for the institution, and contact details of at least two distinguished individuals familiar with the applicant's work.

Applications are to go by Registered or Speed Post to the Under Secretary (TS.1), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, at the Kartavya Bhawan-2 address printed in the advertisement (HS-01, Work Hall No. 2110B, first floor, New Delhi 110001). The notice says the papers should reach the Ministry on or before 31 October 2026.

How the appointment works

IIT Directors are appointed by the Visitor on the recommendation of a Search-cum-Selection Committee. The committee reviews applications and may also consider nominations of eminent persons. The present advertisement is the formal call that opens that process for IIT Delhi.

IIT Delhi is one of the older IITs and runs a large undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral load across engineering, sciences, design and management. The Director's office oversees academic policy, research strategy, campus administration and links with industry and government.

Why the notice matters now

Faculty leaders and researchers who meet the age and experience bar have a defined window until the end of October. Incomplete vision statements or missing referee contacts are easy ways for a file to fall out of consideration, so the paperwork needs the same care as a major research proposal.

The advertisement does not itself announce a change of guard on a fixed date. It opens the application process. Actual appointment timelines after the Search-cum-Selection Committee meets are not set out in this notice.
