Microsoft's new Surface Pro and Laptop get Snapdragon X2 Plus chips

Microsoft has refreshed its two smallest Surface computers, and both now run on Qualcomm's newest laptop silicon. The Surface Pro 12-inch and the Surface Laptop 13-inch, unveiled at Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit, move to the Snapdragon X2 Plus processor and pick up brighter screens and a new black colour.

Brett Ostrum, Corporate Vice President for Surface, said the new generation brings up to 18% more efficient battery performance, more than 60% faster graphics and up to 95% faster on-device AI inferencing on the NPU compared with the previous models. Microsoft also claims up to 17% faster performance in Office workloads.

Surface Pro 12-inch

The Pro 12-inch is the fanless, tablet-first member of the family. It attaches to a Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard and stores the Surface Slim Pen magnetically. Microsoft says the display is now 25% brighter at 500 nits, and the new chip adds an extra hour of active web browsing. The enclosure uses 86% recycled content.

It is also the launch device for Microsoft Ink Canvas, a pen-first app for sketching, annotating, generating images and summarising text directly on a canvas. Ink Canvas will come pre-installed on the Pro 12-inch and will be available from the Microsoft Store on other supported Surface and Windows devices from 13 October.

Commercial buyers get one extra: an optional 5G configuration of the Pro 12-inch, which Microsoft describes as one of the most requested additions to this form factor.

Pricing starts at $1,149.99 in the US, with availability from 13 October in select markets.

Surface Laptop 13-inch and a haptic mouse

The Laptop 13-inch keeps the classic clamshell shape with a full-size backlit keyboard, an aluminium body and a 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen, now also rated at 500 nits. Microsoft quotes up to 22.5 hours of battery life. It starts at $1,199 and also goes on sale from 13 October in select markets.

Alongside the PCs, Microsoft introduced the Surface Mouse, which adds haptic feedback so that actions such as snapping a window produce a small physical response. It has an ambidextrous shape, a customisable button that can call up Copilot, Bluetooth 6.0 for multi-device pairing and 30% recycled content. It is priced at $79.99, in Black and Platinum.

What it means for Indian buyers

Microsoft has not announced India pricing or a local launch date for the new models. Surface devices do reach India, usually through authorised retailers and business channels, but typically later than the US and at prices that sit well above the dollar conversion once import duties and GST are added.

The broader point for Indian laptop buyers is the chip. Snapdragon X2 Plus sits below Qualcomm's top X2 Elite parts and is aimed at thin, light machines. Ostrum said Surface engineers worked with Qualcomm during silicon development to tune the X2 series for sustained performance, quiet thermals and on-device AI in thin machines. Putting it in the most portable Surface models shows where Microsoft expects Arm-based Windows PCs to sell in volume.

For now, the new Surface pair is a US-first launch. Indian customers, especially enterprise buyers who purchase through Surface for Business, will need to wait for Microsoft India to confirm timing and configurations, including whether the 5G Pro model will be offered here.
