MCG Fines 32 Shopkeepers Rs 91,500

GURUGRAM: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram has issued 32 challans and imposed fines totalling Rs 91,500 on shopkeepers over two days for allegedly dumping garbage outside their shops and failing to keep dustbins, civic officials said on Saturday.

The drive covered Islampur, Sikanderpur Furniture Market and Sadar Bazaar. Officials said fines of Rs 50,000 were collected in Sikanderpur Furniture Market, Rs 31,500 in Islampur and Rs 10,000 in Sadar Bazaar. The action is part of MCG's campaign against open dumping in market areas.

Enforcement with awareness pitch

MCG spokesperson SS Rohilla said shopkeepers are being asked not to dump garbage outside their shops and to ensure dustbins are provided so that waste does not spread in the open. He said the objective is to strengthen sanitation in market areas and build responsibility among shopkeepers and citizens. Teams are also running awareness drives alongside enforcement, officials added.

Markets in these belts see heavy footfall, and officials said shopkeepers and other stakeholders are responsible for keeping surroundings clean and disposing of waste properly. The civic body warned that action against violations would continue and appealed to market stakeholders to follow sanitation rules.

Shopkeepers sometimes argue that municipal collection timing and missing public bins make compliance harder. MCG's public line in this drive has focused on private dustbins at each establishment and a ban on throwing waste onto the footpath. Whether the fines change behaviour will show up in whether the same stretches stay clear through the next market rush, not only in the challan tally.

The drive lands while older MCG wards are still clearing a post-strike garbage backlog. Enforcement in markets and faster lifting on residential edges are being treated as parallel tracks. Officials said sustained participation from shopkeepers and residents would be needed to keep market lanes usable for pedestrians and delivery carts.

Islampur, Sikanderpur Furniture Market and Sadar Bazaar are high-footfall retail pockets where cardboard, food waste and packing scrap spill onto footpaths within hours if dustbins are missing. A two-day challan burst can reset behaviour briefly, but MCG will need repeat inspections and reliable secondary collection if the Rs 91,500 fine tally is to mean lasting change.

Shopkeepers who keep bins and still face piled waste from neighbouring dumps will push the civic body to pair fines with timed lifting. Rohilla's line that awareness will run with enforcement is the right mix on paper. The next test is whether the same 32-shop map stays cleaner a week later without another round of challans alone.
