Masjid Ganj Shaheeda Demolition Row: Anjuman Committee Meets DM, Seeks Immediate Stay on Proposed Action

Varanasi: Members of the Anjuman-Intazamia-Masajid Committee met the District Magistrate of Varanasi and demanded an immediate halt to the proposed demolition of Masjid Ganj Shaheeda, arguing that the mosque predates the railway infrastructure in the area and cannot be declared illegal without proper verification.
During the meeting, representatives of the committee, along with the City Mufti, submitted their concerns and urged the administration to carefully examine historical records, revenue documents, and ownership-related evidence before taking any action against the structure.
The delegation claimed that the mosque has existed in the area for decades and was established before the railway facilities were developed nearby. They questioned the basis on which the mosque was being termed an unauthorized structure and called for a transparent review of all relevant documents.
Committee members emphasized that no demolition should be carried out until the legal status of the mosque is thoroughly examined and all stakeholders are given an opportunity to present their case. They also requested a fair hearing and administrative intervention to prevent any action that could lead to public concern.
According to representatives, a memorandum outlining their objections and demands was submitted to the District Magistrate. The committee expressed hope that the administration would consider the historical background of the mosque and ensure that due legal procedures are followed.
The issue has drawn attention in local circles, with the administration expected to review the matter and examine the documents submitted by the delegation before making any further decisions. No official statement regarding the committee's claims was immediately available from the district administration.
