Kashi Marks Baba Lat Bhairav’s Wedding Day After Tilak and Haldi Rituals

Saturday is wedding day at Baba Lat Bhairav’s darbar. The Shri Kapal Bhairav alias Lat Bhairav Prabandhak Samiti has fixed 26 September for the deity’s vivah utsav, closing a week of household-style rituals that began with tilak on Wednesday.

The sequence followed the Banaras family pattern. Tilak was held on 23 September, with Dulha Sarkar taken out in regal style. Thursday night brought the haldi: women in yellow applied turmeric to the vigrah, danced to mangal geet, and carried turmeric home as prasad. Committee president Rohit Jaiswal said the offered haldi was distributed among women and young girls present; young women prayed for a chosen husband, married women for unbroken married life. Media in-charge Sullivan Agrahari described harmonium, dholak and manjira accompanying the songs late into the night. Friday was marked for mehndi. Saturday completes the chain with the wedding itself.

The Samiti’s full name reflects that the deity is also known as Kapal Bhairav. The darbar draws women from the surrounding localities when the vivah days arrive, and the atmosphere on haldi night already looked, organisers said, like a family wedding in full swing. Older women led much of the music. Named participants at the haldi included Tara Jaiswal, Beena Jaiswal, Jyoti Devi, Srishti Verma, Aroma Jaiswal, Priyanka Jaiswal, Poonam Singh, Mala Yadav, Sadhana Gupta and Babita Kushwaha.

On wedding day the same courtyard turns from rehearsal colour to the main ritual, with the Samiti managing crowd flow around the vigrah.
