Family Alleges Youths Chased Car, Assaulted Women and Children Near V-2 Mall in Lanka

A family from Mahamana Puri Colony has alleged that a group of young men on a motorcycle and a scooter chased their car through Lanka on Thursday night, blocked it near V-2 mall, attacked the vehicle and pulled out the women and children inside to beat them. A woman's finger was fractured in the assault, the family says.

The family is that of Vijay Kumar Shukla of Mahamana Puri Colony. According to the family, at around 10.30 pm on 24 September he was driving home with his wife Sandhya, their 15-year-old son and other relatives. They were returning from the house of his brother-in-law in Ashokpuram Colony, where they had gone to check on his nephew.

The family says that as they reached Karmaveer tiraha, young men on a motorcycle and a scooter began following their car. The car kept moving towards Lanka. Near V-2 mall, the family alleges, the men on the scooter pulled in front of the car and blocked the road.

What followed, according to the family, was an attack first on the car and then on the people inside. The men kicked and punched the car and damaged its front glass. When the family objected, the men allegedly dragged the women and children out of the car and assaulted them.

Sandhya's finger was fractured in the attack and her clothes were torn in several places, the family says. They also allege that the 15-year-old boy was beaten, and that Vijay Kumar Shukla was injured.

After the incident, the family went to Lanka police station. Police had medical examinations done for Vijay Kumar and Sandhya. On Friday the family told people and the police about the incident in detail.

The family has asked the police to investigate, identify the attackers and take action against them. They have also asked for more police patrolling at night on the stretch from Karmaveer tiraha to Lanka.

Further action in the matter will depend on the police investigation and the medical reports.

The family's account leaves several questions that the investigation will need to answer. They have not said whether there was any earlier dispute, a brush between vehicles or an argument at Karmaveer tiraha before the chase began, or whether they knew any of the young men. The number of attackers has also not been given.

The family's demand for night patrolling on the Karmaveer tiraha–Lanka stretch suggests they see the problem as bigger than one incident. Whether police step up checks on that road will be the first visible response to the complaint.

All the claims about the attack are allegations made by the family at this stage. The police investigation and the medical reports will establish what happened on the road near V-2 mall.
