Kulbhushan Bhardwaj Elected Gurugram District Bar President

GURUGRAM: Advocate Kulbhushan Bhardwaj has been elected president of the Gurugram District Bar Association after defeating his closest rival by 244 votes in a contest that drew nearly 5,000 lawyers to the polls.

Results announced late Friday showed Bhardwaj securing 1,834 votes, ahead of Vinod Rao on 1,590. Kamaljeet Kataria finished third with 1,124 votes, followed by Santokh Singh with 358, Vinita Vashisht with 40 and Manoj Yadav with 24.

Polling was conducted across 12 booths from 9 am. Of the association's 6,367 registered voters, 4,963 exercised their franchise, putting turnout at close to 78 per cent. The size of the vote reflects the District Bar's role in the daily functioning of one of Haryana's busiest urban court systems, where advocates regularly deal with pressure on courtrooms, parking, filing counters and litigant facilities.

Two votes decide vice-president contest

The closest result came in the race for vice-president. Sahil Yadav received 1,134 votes and defeated Daman Sharma, who polled 1,132. Anoop Yadav secured 976 votes, Lakshya Bhardwaj 965, Sudhir Singh 367 and Naresh Kumar 178. A two-vote margin makes the accuracy of booth records and counting particularly important, though no formal dispute was reported with the declared result.

Reenu Maheshwari won the additional vice-president post in the women's category with 2,218 votes. Prashant Thakran was elected secretary with 1,556 votes, finishing 98 ahead of Vishvendra Yadav. Vikram Yadav won the joint-secretary election with 3,138 votes, while Akshat Jain was elected treasurer with 2,703.

Separate results were also declared for the Sohna Bar Association. Amit Yadav was elected president, Rajbir secretary, Laldahadur vice-president, Anita Rani women's vice-president and Bhupendra Saini joint secretary.

Facilities move to the front of the agenda

Bhardwaj said his priorities would include improving facilities in the court complex and taking advocates' concerns to the relevant authorities. Those promises will require a practical agenda rather than a ceremonial first meeting. Basic issues such as reliable digital filing, seating for litigants, clean washrooms, security queues, parking and access for people with disabilities affect the quality of justice before a hearing even begins.

The new office-bearers also inherit the task of representing a large and professionally diverse membership. Junior lawyers need affordable chambers and training; women advocates need secure facilities and equal access to association spaces; senior practitioners require predictable court administration. Transparent minutes and timelines can help members judge progress between elections.

Friday's turnout gives the incoming team a broad mandate, but the close contests also show that the Bar contains competing priorities. The strongest first step would be to publish a short, costed list of improvements to be pursued with the district judiciary and administration. For 4,963 voters, the election is over; the test now moves from counting promises to resolving the everyday bottlenecks of the Gurugram courts.
