Karkhiyaon Factory Stays Shut as Workers Protest Broken UPSIDA Agro Park Road

A three-day shutdown at a food manufacturing unit in Karkhiyaon has put an unglamorous but costly piece of Varanasi’s industrial infrastructure under the spotlight: the road outside the factory gate. Workers of Nature’s Fresh Enterprises gathered at the UPSIDA on-site office on 10 August, saying the access stretch through Agro Park has deteriorated so badly that reaching the unit has become a daily gamble. Their protest was not over a distant policy promise. It was about potholes, stagnant water and trucks that cannot reliably reach a working production line.
The company says the road surface has been washed away in places and that the surrounding industrial pocket lacks adequate drainage. According to its account, representations have been made to the authorities repeatedly over roughly six months. Workers allege that some depressions are deep enough to topple two-wheelers and that riders have been injured. Heavy vehicles carrying raw material have also become stuck, slowing movement in a zone that is supposed to function around predictable logistics.
That disruption has now travelled from the road to the shop floor. The unit has reportedly remained closed for three days, affecting workers as well as orders, transport schedules and suppliers. Company representatives say they spent substantial sums attempting temporary repairs, but patches cannot compensate for a failed base or a missing route for rainwater. In an industrial estate, a road is not merely a civic amenity; it is part of the production system. Every lost shift has a value, and so does every delayed vehicle.
UPSIDA has reportedly indicated that money has been allocated for repair work. The question raised by the protest is what happens between allocation and execution. A dated work order, contractor details, drainage design and a public completion schedule would give businesses something firmer than another assurance. Dalimss News Banaras also sought the position of regional manager S.M. Patel, who was unavailable for comment at the time of the field report. That response can still be added when received.
There is a wider credibility issue here for Karkhiyaon. Industrial parks are sold on the promise that common infrastructure will allow individual businesses to focus on manufacturing. When an access road fails for months, the burden quietly shifts back to factory owners and workers, who begin paying for improvised repairs, vehicle damage and lost time. Smaller units have the least room to absorb those costs. The episode also shows why drainage has to be treated as part of road engineering rather than an afterthought added once the monsoon exposes a problem.
The immediate test is straightforward: restore safe access, publish the repair timeline and keep the carriageway usable while permanent work is carried out. Workers have made the disruption visible; the next move belongs to the estate authority. Until the road is restored, the shutdown in Karkhiyaon will remain a reminder that industrial growth can be halted by something as basic as the last few hundred metres outside a factory gate.
