Kallipur Training Shows Varanasi Farmers How Micro-Irrigation Can Stretch Every Drop

VARANASI: Farmers attending a training programme at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Kallipur were shown how micro-irrigation can reduce water use while improving the regularity with which crops receive moisture.
The session was held under the Per Drop More Crop component and focused on systems such as drip and sprinkler irrigation. Trainers explained that delivering water closer to the root zone can limit losses through runoff and unnecessary wetting, particularly where fields face irregular supply or the cost of pumping is rising.
For farmers, the decision is not as simple as buying a kit. Drip lines work best when the crop, field layout, water quality and filtration system are considered together. Emitters can clog if silt or dissolved material is not managed, and pressure differences can leave one end of a field under-watered. A practical demonstration should therefore include flushing, filter cleaning, leak detection and the way discharge is checked.
Sprinklers suit some field crops and soil conditions, while drip is commonly considered for vegetables, orchards and row crops. Neither system eliminates the need to understand weather. Running irrigation immediately before heavy rain wastes energy and can contribute to disease. Soil moisture, crop stage and the forecast should guide timing.
The economics deserve equal attention. Farmers need the full installed cost, expected subsidy, maintenance expense and the time taken for reimbursement. A subsidised system that fails for want of a small replacement part is not efficient. Suppliers should provide written warranties, local service contacts and a layout drawing the farmer can understand.
Training at a KVK is most useful when it continues into the field. Demonstration plots can compare water use, yield and power consumption under conventional and micro-irrigation methods. Publishing those local results helps farmers judge claims against soil and climate they recognise, rather than relying on figures from another region.
Micro-irrigation can also change labour. Moving pipes and opening channels may reduce, but workers still need training to operate valves and prepare soluble fertiliser safely where fertigation is used. Over-application through a drip system remains possible; precision equipment does not automatically create precise management.
Varanasi district contains both waterlogged and water-stressed pockets depending on season and location. That contrast makes controlled irrigation valuable. It cannot fix drainage or guarantee a crop price, but it can give a farmer more control over one major input.
The Kallipur session put conservation in practical terms: less water lost between source and root. The real measure will come after installation—systems kept working, costs recorded and farmers able to show whether each drop produced a better return.
