Kaal Bhairav Gali Gets a Saffron Makeover in Varanasi Municipal Corporation’s Latest Heritage Drive

VARANASI — In a major push toward heritage conservation and urban aesthetic renewal, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has completely transformed Kaal Bhairav Gali—one of Kashi's most ancient and revered spiritual corridors. The civic body has undertaken a sweeping beautification initiative, painting the facades of all buildings along the historic lane in a uniform, vibrant shade of saffron.
The makeover is carefully designed to mirror the city's profound spiritual ethos, creating a visually harmonious path for the thousands of pilgrims and tourists who traverse the narrow lane daily.
Elevating the Pilgrim Experience
The historic alley serves as the primary approach road to the ancient Kaal Bhairav Temple, whose deity is traditionally revered as the "Kotwal of Kashi" (the celestial police chief or guardian of Varanasi). For centuries, the path was a chaotic tapestry of mismatched storefronts, weathered plaster, and modern concrete additions.
The newly implemented saffron theme has drastically altered the ambiance, offering several key improvements to the heritage zone:
Visual Harmony: The uniform color scheme binds centuries-old architecture and modern structures into a singular, cohesive aesthetic.
Cultural Reaffirmation: The chosen shade of saffron represents renunciation, purity, and devotion—deeply reinforcing the spiritual identity of one of India's oldest living cities.
Enhanced Lighting: Local shopkeepers note that the bright, uniform walls have significantly improved the reflection of ambient light within the traditionally dimly lit, narrow alleyway.
