IMD Escalates East UP Alert: Extremely Heavy Rain Today, Heavy on 27 Sep

The India Meteorological Department has sharpened its East Uttar Pradesh subdivision warning on Saturday, 26 September, and the top cell now reads Extremely Heavy Rain rather than the Very Heavy wording that sat on Friday’s board.

According to the official table issued today, Day 1 (26 September) carries Extremely Heavy Rain with thunderstorm, lightning and squall. Day 2 (27 September) steps to Heavy Rain, still with thunderstorm, lightning and squall. From Day 3 through Day 7 — 28 September, 29 September, 30 September, 1 October and 2 October — the East UP box shows No warning.

That is a clear upgrade from the 25 September product. Yesterday’s chart had Very Heavy Rain on both 25 and 26 September, Heavy Rain on the 27th, and a clean stretch from 28 September through 1 October. Saturday’s revision keeps the weekend risk but lifts today’s language into the Extremely Heavy band and extends the “No warning” clear window through 2 October.

For Varanasi the reading is practical. Saturday is the peak intensity day on the official East UP row. Low lanes, underpasses and ghat approaches that filled after mid-week cells can fill again if a severe burst sits over the city. Sunday remains a Heavy Rain day, so pumping and drain clearance through the weekend stay on the civic checklist. From Monday the official East UP warning board goes quiet into early October on this issue.

Lightning and squall language on Days 1 and 2 is not filler. Short severe bursts can still arrive even when the morning only looks grey. Outdoor cable work, open terrace jobs and evening riverfront crowds should treat that hazard as live through Sunday. Farmers and transporters moving perishable loads out of the Purvanchal belt toward Varanasi mandis will watch the same Day 1 extreme cell.

School authorities have already ordered a student holiday through Class 12 for Saturday on the back of the rain alert. That administrative step and this meteorological upgrade are separate products, but they point at the same saturated weekend.
