IIT Madras lists new academic programmes for 2026-27, from Robotics M.Tech to BS Mathematics

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has published a consolidated list of new academic programmes for 2026-27. The sheet covers fresh M.Tech specialisations, a BS in Mathematics, joint master's tracks with overseas universities, and other offerings, each with an eligibility route and, where ready, an admission link.

The document is hosted on the institute website under its public files for the current admissions cycle. It is the clearest single map of what IIT Madras is adding this year beyond its long-running programmes.

GATE-linked M.Tech and MA options

Several new postgraduate programmes route through GATE and the IIT Madras M.Tech admissions portal at mtechadm.iitm.ac.in. Among them are M.Tech in Robotics; M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with specialisation in Computational Engineering for Mechanical Systems; and M.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering with specialisation in Semiconductor Materials Technology.

An M.A. in Public Policy is also listed with GATE as the entry path and the same M.Tech admissions portal link. Applicants should still read the department brochure, because Public Policy admissions sometimes add interviews or statement rounds on top of the GATE shortlist.

Undergraduate and BS routes

A B.S. in Mathematics appears on the list with JEE Advanced as the gateway and JoSAA as the counselling link. That places the programme inside the national IIT seat matrix rather than a separate institute-only form.

The sheet also names a BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology for students who have completed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics. Candidates should confirm on the live admissions pages whether that programme uses a separate IIT Madras application or another national channel, because the document's entry note is brief.

Joint and specialised master's tracks

A cluster of joint M.Sc. programmes is described with partner universities. M.Sc. in Materials and Manufacturing and M.Sc. in Sustainable Engineering both refer to collaboration with Swansea University. Eligibility notes ask for a recognised bachelor's degree in relevant engineering or science streams, with Indian applicants normally needing a four-year engineering degree or a longer science pathway, plus an online test and a joint interview.

M.Sc. in Sports Analytics and AI lists a bachelor's degree of three or more years in engineering, science or sports science in a numerate discipline, with screening and a joint interview involving IIT Madras and University of Birmingham faculty. M.Sc. in Offshore and Maritime Engineering is shown with interview or written test as the route.

An M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering linked to the University of Peradeniya pathway, and an M.Tech. in Process Safety with CODE-linked applications, also appear. Process Safety asks for a BE/B.Tech in listed branches or M.Sc. Chemistry, with a 60 percent aggregate (or 50 percent plus two years' relevant work experience).

What applicants should verify

Programme lists move. Seat counts, exact partner MOUs and fee structures sit in the detailed brochures and GOAPS or JoSAA notices, not in a one-page summary. Anyone targeting Robotics or Semiconductor Materials Technology should open the M.Tech portal deadlines for 2026-27 before assuming a GATE score alone is enough.

International joint degrees often need extra English-language or visa steps that Indian-only M.Tech programmes do not. Budget time for those if a Swansea or Birmingham track is the aim.

IIT Madras updates department pages through the year. The new-programmes file is a useful checklist. It is not a substitute for the live application form on the day you apply.
