High-Speed SUV Race Ends in Disaster: Out-of-Control Thar Rams Auto, Cyclist Before Overturning near Harhua

VARANASI — A dangerous late-night street race between two luxury SUVs turned catastrophic on the outskirts of the city, leaving multiple people injured and triggering immense panic among commuters.
The incident occurred along the high-transit stretch leading from the Markandeya Mahadev area toward the Harhua Ring Road crossing, when an overspeeding Mahindra Thar lost control, rammed into an auto-rickshaw and a bicycle, and subsequently overturned into a roadside ditch.
Witnesses Describe Terror on the Road
According to eyewitnesses, two Mahindra Thar SUVs were traveling at extreme speeds, aggressively maneuvering and reportedly racing each other down the highway. As the vehicles approached the Harhua perimeter, the driver of one of the black SUVs lost absolute control due to the excessive velocity.
The erratic vehicle veered violently off its path, crashing heavily into a commercial auto-rickshaw traveling alongside the shoulder of the road. Without slowing down, the out-of-control SUV then struck a local cyclist before flipping over multiple times and landing upside down in a ditch. The second Thar involved in the alleged race reportedly sped away from the scene without stopping.
Casualties and Emergency Response
The violent succession of impacts caused immediate chaos on the highway, with passing motorists rushing to pull the victims from the debris.
The Auto-Rickshaw: The three-wheeler sustained heavy structural damage, leaving the driver and occupants with severe impact injuries.
The Cyclist: The cyclist was thrown onto the tarmac upon impact, sustaining multiple fractures.
The Thar Occupants: The occupants of the overturned SUV also suffered injuries, with some trapped inside the mangled cabin until locals managed to breach the doors.
Local police units from the area arrived at the spot shortly after being alerted by commuters. With the assistance of bystanders, the police evacuated all the injured individuals and rushed them to the nearest hospital for emergency medical attention.
Investigation Underway
The mangled remains of the auto-rickshaw and the overturned Thar have been taken into police custody. Authorities have registered a case and are actively analyzing highway CCTV footage to identify the registration details of the second Thar that fled the scene. A detailed investigation into the exact sequence of events is currently underway, and further updates regarding the medical status of the victims are awaited.
