VARANASI: A collapsed road shoulder and deep cavity near the Wajidpur overbridge on the Babatpur–Varanasi route has remained an accident risk for months, according to residents who want the area secured and repaired before a vehicle leaves the carriageway.

The damaged edge is particularly dangerous at night and during rain, when water can hide the depth of a washout and headlights give a driver little time to react. Two-wheelers are most exposed, but a car or goods vehicle can also overturn if a wheel drops into an unsupported shoulder.

The first job is to make the hazard visible

A durable barricade, warning lights and advance signs should be installed immediately. A ribbon or a few stones placed beside a hole are not adequate on a road carrying airport traffic and regular local movement. The agency responsible should also prevent pedestrians from using the unstable edge.

Repair crews need to determine why the shoulder failed. Possibilities include leaking water lines, blocked drainage, erosion around a culvert, poorly compacted fill or repeated loading at the edge. Filling the visible cavity without correcting the source can create a smooth surface over another void.

Who is accountable

The Babatpur corridor involves major road infrastructure and multiple agencies, which can make even a local defect difficult to assign. District officials should identify the maintenance authority publicly and issue a work order with a completion date. Residents should not have to decide whether a complaint belongs to the public works department, a highway agency or a contractor.

An engineering inspection should extend beyond the single hole. Cracks, settlement, drainage outlets and the overbridge approach need to be checked for signs of a wider failure. If excavation is required, traffic management must protect workers and avoid sudden lane changes.

The report says the danger has existed for several months. That duration should be verified through complaint logs, but photographs and current conditions are enough to justify immediate action. Waiting for a serious crash would convert a maintenance lapse into a preventable tragedy.

Wajidpur residents are not asking for a new highway. They are asking the road authority to restore the safety margin that drivers assume exists beside the lane. A properly investigated repair, visible barricading and a public completion update can resolve the hazard—and demonstrate that small but dangerous defects receive attention before they become breaking news.

The authority should keep the repair site photographed before backfilling and document the material used. Those records matter if the shoulder settles again. A maintenance job is successful not when the hole disappears for a week, but when drainage, compaction and edge support keep the road stable through the next monsoon cycle.
