The University of Calicut opened 2026 PhD applications on October 17, with submissions without a fine due by midnight on October 26. The notice dated October 16, posted on October 17, sets October 31 as the late-application deadline. The entrance examination is tentatively scheduled for November.

The public application portal asks candidates to keep a personal email address active throughout admissions and provide their own mobile number, or a parent’s number if necessary. Its instructions warn that applications made under Anytime Registration will not enter the shortlist published after the entrance examination. The admissions page separately says that Anytime Registration will be activated after the current application deadline. Applicants should therefore distinguish that facility from the entrance-based or direct-admission route displayed for this cycle.

Eligibility, NET scores and the research commitment

The Research Regulations 2023 set out the academic entry routes: a recognised master’s qualification with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade, including the specified one-year master’s after a four-year bachelor’s and two-year master’s after a three-year bachelor’s. A five-percentage-point relaxation may apply to the listed reserved categories, including SC, ST, non-creamy-layer OBC, persons with disabilities and EWS. The relevant Research Advisory Committee must recommend the qualification’s eligibility.

Part-time applicants must also meet the employment conditions. The regulations require an employer’s no-objection certificate confirming permission to study, sufficient time for research and release for coursework. The specified contract or guest-teacher route requires at least 12 months’ experience and continuing service, with an undertaking from the appropriate institutional authority. Holding a job alone should not be treated as proof of eligibility for part-time registration.

For NET applicants, the university’s December 27, 2024 order, cited in the current notification, explains the selection distinction. JRF-qualified candidates are assessed through an interview. For NET Categories 2 and 3, the test score carries 70% weight and the interview or viva carries 30%; those NET marks are valid for admission for one year. Category 2 covers eligibility for an assistant-professor appointment and PhD admission without JRF. Category 3 is for PhD admission only. Neither category, by itself, awards JRF. Applicants need to identify the category on their result rather than assume that every NET qualification includes JRF funding.

The standing regulations also make the time commitment clear: the programme normally runs for at least three years, including coursework, and up to six years. Coursework requires at least 12 credits, with research methodology and publication ethics among its components. The departmental coursework must be completed during the initial one or two years.

Application costs and what to watch next

The current application fee is ₹920 for the general category and ₹350 for SC/ST applicants, checked on October 19 at 1:40 pm IST. The notification says payments are non-refundable. Admission is restricted to notified vacancies; the appended list should be checked against the intended discipline and research centre.

This application payment should not be read as the entire cost of a doctorate. The Directorate of Research’s separate standing fee schedule lists PhD registration including its application fee at ₹3,435, alongside separate examination, thesis-submission and certificate charges. These are displayed amounts checked on October 19 at 1:41 pm IST. The page does not state an effective date, so candidates should confirm the applicable registration-stage charges before budgeting or paying.

For entrance preparation, the admissions page still links a question-paper format labelled 2024. That reference shows a two-hour, 100-mark paper with one-, two-, five- and ten-mark questions, covering research methodology and the subject concerned. It is an older preparation resource, not a newly issued 2026 examination pattern. Candidates should check the forthcoming examination instructions before treating its timing and section structure as confirmed for this intake.

The exact entrance date and next admission-stage instructions are due later. Candidates will not receive individual communications about examination or admission activity.
