VARANASI: Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal inaugurated a newly built cafe and a renovated badminton court at the Police Lines on Tuesday evening, presenting the facilities as an investment in health, recreation and a more functional workplace for personnel. Agarwal also played on the court during the opening, giving the ceremony a practical rather than purely ribbon-cutting moment.

Additional Police Commissioner Shivhari Meena, DCP Varuna Zone and Headquarters Pramod Kumar, Additional DCP Lines Vaibhav Bangar and ACP Lines Gaurav Kumar were among the officers present, according to the report. The commissioner said the additions would give the campus a more modern, orderly appearance and could support fitness, efficiency and a healthier work environment.

Police work is organised around shifts, emergencies and long periods of alertness. A court inside the workplace can be useful only if constables and support staff—not just senior officers—have realistic access around duty hours. Transparent access would demonstrate that the project is a welfare measure rather than an image exercise.

A six-month review could record participation by rank and shift, injuries, maintenance needs and feedback.
