BHU Signs MoU With VCA Healthcare for Herbal Formulation Research

Banaras Hindu University and VCA Healthcare signed a memorandum of understanding on Saturday for scientific evaluation of herbal formulations, with the work to sit under Prof. Raghav Kumar Mishra of the Department of Zoology and his laboratory handling the testing load.

The partnership is framed as a bridge between Ayurveda and herbal product lines on one side and modern laboratory evidence on the other. VCA Healthcare is to provide formulations, extracts and related materials along with technical information, and, by mutual agreement, financial support for materials, consumables and human resources needed for the studies. Dr V. K. Tripathi of VCA said validating efficacy and safety through modern methods was needed if such products were to see wider use.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi said the MoU would open academia–industry research opportunities for students and researchers at the university. That line sits with BHU’s broader push to put industry-facing projects into department labs rather than leaving herbal claims untested. Mishra’s own research areas — male reproductive physiology, reproductive health, stress-induced reproductive disorders and the biological effects of natural products — are the scientific home for the evaluation work described in the agreement.

For students in Zoology and allied life-science programmes the practical change is access to real formulations and a funded consumables line inside an active lab, rather than only textbook case studies. For the company the gain is university-grade testing protocols and a publication-ready evidence trail if the results support the products. Neither side has, on the record used here, promised a launch date or a named product list; the MoU is about evaluation capacity, not a marketing calendar.

Herbal and plant-based health products move through Indian markets with uneven documentation. University MoUs of this kind are one route regulators and clinicians look for when they ask what was measured, in which assay, and under whose supervision. Placing the work in a Zoology department lab rather than only in an Ayurvedic teaching unit is a deliberate modern-methods signal in the language both sides used on Saturday.
