800 Varanasi SHG Women Prepare Three Lakh Tricolours for Har Ghar Tiranga

VARANASI: Around 800 women linked to self-help groups across Varanasi are preparing approximately three lakh Tricolours for the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, turning a national celebration into a short but significant cycle of local production and income.
The participating group includes Hindu and Muslim women working together to cut, stitch, check and package flags ahead of Independence Day. Organisers estimate that the women could collectively earn between ₹6 lakh and ₹9 lakh from the order, depending on final production and payment terms.
Work behind the campaign image
Public campaigns are often seen only at the distribution stage, when flags appear at homes, schools and offices. The Varanasi initiative puts attention on the work before that moment. Materials must be supplied, dimensions maintained, colours checked and finished flags bundled in time for delivery.
For self-help-group members, the assignment offers paid work that can be done in teams and, in some cases, close to home. That matters for women balancing household responsibilities or unable to travel regularly to a factory. A large order can also help a group demonstrate capacity for future contracts beyond festival periods.
The reported earnings work out to a wide range when divided among 800 participants. Organisers should clearly communicate whether payments are per piece, per day or shared through group accounts, and when the money will reach individual workers. Transparent records will make the empowerment claim measurable rather than ceremonial.
Quality and respect for the flag
The national flag is governed by standards concerning its design and respectful use. Production teams therefore carry a responsibility beyond meeting quantity. Correct proportion, the placement of the Ashoka Chakra and careful packaging are essential, as is guidance to recipients on dignified display and disposal.
The social value of the project lies in its combination of cooperation and earning. Women from different communities are contributing to one visible public programme while strengthening the practical networks of their self-help groups. Those networks can support savings, credit access and small enterprises long after Independence Day.
The three-lakh target is ambitious, and the final count and payment should be disclosed when distribution is complete. If the organisers deliver on both production and fair compensation, Varanasi’s Har Ghar Tiranga drive will carry a story that is easy to miss from the street: hundreds of local women converted a patriotic symbol into organised work, shared responsibility and income earned by their own hands.
After August 15, the groups should be offered links to year-round procurement in school uniforms, packaging or other stitched products. One seasonal order can prove capacity, but stable income requires a pipeline. Connecting the women to quality certification, digital payments and buyers would make the campaign’s economic promise last beyond the final flag distribution.
