₹30 Crore Spent, Elections Deferred: Questions Raised Over UP Panchayat Poll Preparations

The deferment of panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh has raised serious questions after more than ₹30 crore was spent on preparations ahead of the April 15 deadline set by the court. The State Election Commission carried out large-scale arrangements, including procurement of EVMs, indelible ink, printing of papers, and training of personnel. However, with the elections now postponed, much of the material remains unused, sparking concerns over planning and financial prudence.

A significant portion of the expenditure was incurred on logistics. Around ₹3 crore was spent on transporting EVMs from other states, and a similar amount is expected to be spent on returning them, effectively doubling the cost. Additionally, ₹5.90 crore was spent on indelible ink, which comes with a limited usability period, raising concerns about potential wastage. Expenses on paper procurement, voter training, and other arrangements further added to the overall cost, bringing the total close to ₹30 crore.

The delay has been attributed to the pending process of finalizing OBC reservation, as the tenure of the concerned commission has been extended until September 30. While the government is expected to seek more time from the Supreme Court, the situation has triggered a broader debate on accountability. With substantial public funds already spent and elections pushed back by several months, questions remain over whether this was an unavoidable administrative step or a lapse in coordination between authorities.
